howdy,

I am gearing up to go to a commercial dive school soon and become a member of workin society. My question is about a part of the school that makes me nervous.

I talked to the women in admissions and she said that ,around week 4 of classes ,every student will be thrown into the chamber and tested to see if physiologically they can withstand a certain amount of pressure. Really this is my main concern and i would appreciate somebody who knows all about this test.

I heard like 1 in a hundred fail the test and i would love some details. My concern is the vast investment i will be makin across the board to gear my life in the schools direction and then whammo!!!! it turns out ive failed the test after im already enrolled and spent 5 figures gettin there.

Is there a way i can get this test on my own somewhere[for my own peace of mind] before i go spendin all my effort and money on what could be a waste?
Please, somebody, tell me all you know.

thanx

without knowing what the "dive profile" is for the chamber ride, I can only guess. Two things come to mind. One, is any issues that might come under the heading of squeezes (barotrauma). The other might be how affected you are by nitrogen narcosis (perform eye/hand/logic tests at a certain "depth")

I guess my view is that I'd want something in my contract with them that allows for substantial refund in the event of a non-academic/medical washout.

there is something called high pressure nervous syndrome. This is seen in saturation divers at very high pressures, like 600 or 1,000 ft. I dout that they would be checking for that, i would take a long time

Okie Dokie...

Here's the senerio...

You and three of your best dive buddies from school are about to blow the recreational tables so far out of the water it's not even funny.

You will decend to arround 280 fsw on air ofer a period of a few minutes, and most likely be narced out of your skull. If you have never been narced, imagine drinking a beer for ever atmosphere you pass, try to do this "dry chamber dive with the hottest girl in your class, if there are any girls in your class, as people have been known to strip naked at the slightest hint.

Now, while you are down there for a few mins, you are going to be checked for basicly three things,

1. Are you particularly vulnerable to O2 toxicity?
2. Do you freak out when Narced? (do you panic?)
3. Are you clausterphobic?

Me personally, I didn't even get narced, I was disapointed. :(

Just relax and enjoy the ride. I have seen over a hundred people take this test, and other than the girl who stripped because someone said it was hot in there, no one's ever failed... Actually, she didn't fail either, but it was fun to watch :)
