Beaver dam it! Just when I thought it was safe to look at the interwebs again, the Wizard Of Shearwater pulled another rabbit out of his tuque.
My initial impression of the Teric was that it sure looked elegant, and my first reading of the specs indicated that it was an even more capable unit than my Predator, Petrel, Perdix, and Perdix AI, though in a much smaller form factor, but certainly not anything that I should rush out and buy.
I presumed that the data displays would not be nearly large enough for my aging eyes to see clearly. Then I watched one of the Shearwater videos which showed a Teric side by side with a Perdix, and the numerals were of a similar size and very easy to read.
Then the wheels and cogs in my head started to grind and turn: “Hey dummy,” I told myself; “you don’t have a great redundant computer when you dive your rebreather. You’ve run out of space on your skinny forearms as they already are covered with a slate, controller, watch, Predator, and compass.” I could replace the watch and compass with a Teric, and should the Teric prove as reliable as my other Shearwaters, keep my Perdix AI as my primary OC computer, use the Teric as a redundant unit, and make a gift of my current backup Perdix to my son.
The only specific aspect of the Teric that does not thrill me is the estimated battery life between charges. I ALWAYS wear a watch, so will not really be able to replace my regular timepieces with the Teric for daily wear, and I’ve come to relish the ability to quickly change the batteries in my Shearwaters in the field. According to the Shearwater specs, it will take about 90 minutes to recharge a Teric.
On another thread on theses forums I wrote about my complete satisfaction with my Shearwater computers, and the service I received on the lone occasion when I required assistance, and stated that I could not foresee wanting or needing anything that they did not already make. I wrote that within the last 6 months, and now have to eat my words as the aforementioned Wizard has introduced another product that while I don’t really need, could most certainly be put to very good use, and that I want.
I’m within 20 miles of several Shearwater dealers, (most of whose owners children I’m responsible for feeding, clothing, and educating as a result of my patronage), and at least one of them is going to get a call asking to be informed when Terics are in stock.
