Not to be a smart ass but my spare air is a Apex TX250 and 19cu in Pony attached to my HP100, I do enough diving in cold water with new people that I want an airsource that I can separate from myself if necessary. The spare air at 80" in cold water would not last long.

How do you separate a pony that is attached to your HP100?
I'd like to see that setup.
But again, pony bottles are not the solution for lacking airmanagement skills.

WOW, yall have so much on the ball! I just today learned about the thread re-views. Now I see what you all have been sayin' in responnes to my simple questions. (I haven't checked this thread in a really long while)I had no idea that all my words would be tossed around in this manner. I was just looking for a simple answer to a simple question.(Spare air,Spare Death..call it what you will) To be clear I do have an AOW cert. (which aint much I admit, but its all I have to offer at this time) Yes, I am somewhat new. My air consumption is reall good, considering that I am a larger male person. I do not try to be more full of my self than I am. I look at all dive education as a new beginning............. <SNIP>

LOL, relax, you'll be fine :mean:

Folks,

I am in the process of determining what I want to do for an alternative, secondary air source. I have yet to need one but, like a parachute, not something I want to suddenly need, and not have. :)

My questions are:

1. Does anyone use a "Spare Air" brand ? do you like it, etc. ?

2. If no to 1, what do you use for your secondary ?

All info is welcome and, as always, thanks for the feedback.

Please do a search on this subject. There have been 8 million threads on it and the overall concensus is that it is a useless piece of garbage for diving.

Do some math and you will find out that 3cft of air will not get you to the surface from any depth where redudancy is worthwhile. It is *not* a redundant source of air.

Spare air is way too expensive and unreliable in my opinion...

There is another thread going on about a pony right now...to which I am also opposed.

Your secondary air source should be your buddy. There is not good substitue for your buddy...in single tank diving.

If you are genuinely concerned about having a fully redundant air source, doubles are the way to go.

...please forgive the rude response of Soggy and Big-T... they are actually closet Spare Air users and are just trying to throw the dogs off scent.

Anyway here are some links to several stories... #4 has an actual OOA in which the Spare Air played a crucial role.

'clueless newbie diver' like having a SA clipped off somewhere.

You don't want one. Honest.

If you really think you need a redundant air source (and you may - don't listen to the idgits who say "dive with a REAL buddy" - aka "DIR") then buy a REAL redundant air source.

My personal minimum is a 19cf pony, slung like a stage bottle. On any NDL dive that WILL get me to the surface at a SANE ascent rate, and SHOULD permit me a safety stop.

A 30 or 40 slung is even better, and doubles as a light deco bottle if you get into that kind of diving, but those start to get pretty big for NDL diving. The 19cf is a nice size and if slung it ride out of the way when you're actually diving.

Pug is right. Welcome aboard. T and I aren't always this pissy :)

However, the Spare Air is an overpriced piece of equipment that has no place in diving, IMO.

Sorrry if I came off rude...I got my butt whipped last night at darts...and today I'm losing a battle with a program....plus...we ran out of coffeee at work...I think I'm going home soon.

But anyway...

For those of us that dive with buddies (and no genesis...my buddies have NEVER had training other than NAUI) I don't feel there's a need for a pony...you have a buddy...no need for extra crap

If you want to dive solo or make a dive that might warrant you being far far away from your buddy....that's your perogative...just make sure to get something big enough...or go a route that offers enough gas to get your behind safely back to the surface.
