Being new to the board, I had not realized the 'Genesis Agenda' and approach. When faced with logic, attack the individual. So I'll pass on continuing on trying to understand his reasoning/logic.

I don't own an LDS, but instruct at one and occasionally help out. With minor exceptions, my expeience at most LDS in SoCal are that they are rather spartan and don't make a lot of money. So, the reality may soon be, for us here in SoCal, that the standard LDS will go the way of the dinosaur forcing me to go to Sport Chalet to get an airfill.

Whether I teach or not is not an issue as it is a side line....I don't really get too rich making (about $3/hr per student) teaching O/W. I will miss the comradery (sp?) with other staff and divers...I don't see many hanging out at Sport Chalet and generally the staff there are minimum wage college students who have been diving for a year or two.

Purchasing of equipment will likely be over the internet...but with DiscountDivers so close, at least if I want to touch the stuff I can...maybe they will even chat with me and tell me about the new stuff coming...assuming they carry it, know about it, or even care...after all they aren't making much money on me with their rock bottom prices, so they can't afford to socialize to much.

To some diving, is a lifestyle. To others it just an activity. Even I though I workout frequently, I don't socialize at the gym nor at the Sporting Goods Store...so I can certainly understand that view.

I already book most of my travel through the internet, so thats not going to be much of a change for me. Of course if things don't change in the airline industry pretty quickly, there may not be any flights to areas where I want to dive...like Chuuk and Palau or maybe I will be just priced out of it (getting close to it now).

Yup, maybe LDS will go the way of the dinosaur. Some people will rejoice, while others (like me) will feel like a void is being created.

Leisure Pro always has awesome prices. They are probably about the cheapest you will find. My brother bought a Mares Vector for about $180 (he bought in a package) from LP and then we saw it for $500 in a LDS. I guess the rule is....shop around before you invest especially when it is a hobby that is sooooo expensive! LP has gotton a bad rap in the past but I have had nothing but poistive expereinces with them. My entire family does business with LP. Enjoy the new equipment! Dive happy and safe!

Rick Inman,

I can't speak for other shops but we don't abuse people for buying somewhere else.

As a wise consumer, you should always shop around. But did you quote the highest competitor price available? I have compared prices to the LDS in my area and have found they are within a few dollars of LP. Not worth the effort to buy something via mail and hope it shows up in good condition. Also remember the postage, any additional taxes or exchange rates.

There is more to a piece of gear than just the price: training, service, warranty and repairs or modifications.

Just remember all the factors when deciding where to purchase.

Well, Mike, that's good. But it's a long drive from Spokane...;)

Mike,

You aren't able to speak for my LDS either. Nothing gets them more upset than when somebody buys from the internet. I don't do all of my shopping from the internet, however, and if your LDS was in my city the you'd have my business.

I like my LDS. They understand that some of the stuff I buy I can get cheaper and being a student I need to watch the pennies and they appreciate that. That said I try and buy from the cheapest Dive Shop I can find rather than from some big on-line company.

I told the guy who runs my LDS that I was buying Vyper and asked hpw much he would did them for. When I told him that another shop could sell it to me for £60 less he actually told me to go with them because he couldn't cut to the same price.

I guess he appreciates the fact that almost every Friday evening I am in the shop getting an air fill and picking up bits and pieces that I need from him before the weekend. Also the fact that if my brothers who both windsurf want anything I will always try and order it from him because stuff like that is cheaper in the UK than in Ireland and I can take it home when I visit and save them a bit of money.

OTOH there is another shop which I would have liked to have given my custom to but that has messed me around so much with stuff that I can't be bothered - if they don't want my custom I don't want their service.

Here is the deal guys. How many of you buy your equipment online. I know you should support your local dive shops but when I had the choice to save well over $100 on a bc I jumped at the chance. I am now looking at buying most if not all my gear online. My dive instructor/dive shop owner seemed a little bit irked when he found out. Is there any pieces I should definitaly buy through a dive shop? Again I know I can beat my dealers price on the regulator I want by over $100. Any thoughts about the warranty issue for stuff bought online?

I've made the majority of purchases online. The purchases I've made at the LDS have been good deals. I'm not wealthy. It's always a trade off between prices and services of course. And it's your call.

When I bought 8 tanks at the local shop it came with 100 fills per tank. But their price to do a visual is way higher than other shops I've visited while on vacation.

I have no idea if the warranty issues would be a problem as so far nothing has broken down.

its about 1700$ (nzd) and online i can get it for 700$ (nzd)
