Brian,

Were not talking about cameras.........I mean, we are now but that was not my take.

I was just adding info about grey market cameras that you said were perfectly fine. This article said otherwise and perhaps someone else here will find it usefull, I know I did.

It seems that these threads often wander in many directions, which is often where some of the most interesting info comes from.

Sorry if it bothered you personally, it was not my intent to target you.

Cheers.

Brain,

I never said that grey market cameras were fine. I said there was nothing wrong with grey market scuba gear. Because it's grey market does not mean it's junk.......in scuaba gear.......not cameras.

Hey Melv

Exactly what in the world is your point? Were not talking about Sony and were not talking about grey market products...even if we were, there is nothing wrong with grey market products anyway. What, you think the europeans get the rejects and us superior Americans have higher quality standards and we get only the good stuff? In my book if LP offers a warranty why do I care if I have the Mfg.'s warranty. And again, we all know that LP is not an authorized dealer.

Sorry but that's what it looked like to me.

I was not trying to slam you or get into a peeing match.

Oh and buy the way thanks for calling me Brain - LOL

I save so much money buying things at LP that I can afford to replace some items if they begin to go bad, and I have difficulty getting them repaired. Since I, and apparently most of you, seem to like the state of the art equipment it does become more affordable to upgrade frequently. So far I haven't had to replace any equipment due to manufacturers defect, and am upgrading equipment often. I haven't had to use the LP warranty yet, probably due to the fact that if you buy top line equipment it shouldn't require warranty work. The only question I have about the equipment purchased from LP is whether or not my LDS will honor repairs on recalled components.

"When you buy Aqua Lung life support products from your authorized dealer you are buying from trained proffesionals who can instruct you on the proper and safe use of your equipment."

Is this like being "Trail Rated" if you're a Jeep?

Do you work in a dive shop?

I just thought I recognized the story. The truth is, while some LDSs may rip you off charging you $25.00 per service kit, the wholesale on those kits is more like $5.00 or less. While Diveinn was offering SP kits, their retail price was $5.00 to $12.00. And you failed to mention that almost all shops charge for the service. $50.00 to $100.00 per rig will usually do it. But I have found that I can go 3 to 5 years between a full service, with good routine care and some minor adjustment. So, if you run those numbers, the "warrenty" may never pays off.

Yeah, your right it runs about $50 for a 1ststage, second and octo for the annual service. I can't believe you go 3- 5 yrs on a high end reg without getting it serviced!! As for me, I get my regs serviced every year...its life support gear and is worth the $50 a year to me. I am mainly doing cave diving right now and the functionality of my reg is the last thing I want to be worried about 100ft down and 1300ft into a system. But, yeah, I'll acknowledge that if you care for the regs yourself and can get parts kit cheap, the numbers will probably never add up.

I don't know how to service them myself (would love to get the training sometime) and I can't get the parts kits anyhow.

i've quoted prices before on the board but I don't think there's any parts kit that we get for $5. The most expensive we get is for the Apeks from Zeagle. I'm a Zeagle dealer so they sell me parts to service the Apeks that they used to sell. From memory, my cost is like $36

I can look it up if you want an exact price but the point is it's way over $5. There might be some second stage kits that we get for 5 or 8 bucks but nothing else.

And yes when we were servicing regs we were charging I think $75 for labor. It takes a couple of hours to do right and more if it's all sloped up with corrosion from salt. We've had some that you couldn't hardly get apart. For a couple hours of time $75 is more than reasonable. The local Chevy dealer here is $65 an hour from the time they walk up to the vehicle. And you pay the same rate even if they are unable to figure out and fix the problem so all you get for that cost is their time with Zero gauranty of results.

The outfit that does compressor repairs charges $80 or so an hour from the time the tech leaves their shop which is 4 hours away. Oh, and the markup on parts is 100%.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with that last statement regarding LP being more helpful. I am only speaking in terms of Dive Rite products. Dive Rite is EXTREMELY helpful when it comes to their products. They have, oftentimes, gone beyond their warranty requirements to help customer's out so long as they can provide proof of purchase. They are a fantastic company and I would by their products from authorized dealers.

As far as LP...I've bought many things from them, but you have to make your choices wisely. For instance, you would be a fool to buy Scuba Pro regs from LP becuase the free parts for life warranty does not hold. The $150 in savings is lost after three years of getting your reg serviced(parts kit is around $25).

if you buy a scuba pro reg from LP, parts are free, you pay only for labor.
