I have tried to claim on warranties for cars in the past and found that they werent worth the paper that they were written on (always some loophole they can get out with!:upset: ). Are diving gear warranties really worth anything? Can you easily claim on them (assuming you are still alive) if something is bad?

It's the same way with dive gear. I had some problems with different pieces of gear that I bought from the LDS at full price. Neither the LDS or the manufacturer were helpful.

This being the case, I say buy all your gear from LeisurePro. LeisurePro will give the same warranty as the manufacturer and seems to be more helpful as well. The lower price is just an added bonus. "SeaJay" here on the boards had to return something to LeisurePro and received great service.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with that last statement regarding LP being more helpful. I am only speaking in terms of Dive Rite products. Dive Rite is EXTREMELY helpful when it comes to their products. They have, oftentimes, gone beyond their warranty requirements to help customer's out so long as they can provide proof of purchase. They are a fantastic company and I would by their products from authorized dealers.

As far as LP...I've bought many things from them, but you have to make your choices wisely. For instance, you would be a fool to buy Scuba Pro regs from LP becuase the free parts for life warranty does not hold. The $150 in savings is lost after three years of getting your reg serviced(parts kit is around $25).

A lot of people do not have a SP tech in there area and end up having to service their regs themselves. It is also extremely hard to find a good reg tech anywhere. For people in this situation, the warranty is of no use anyway. Also, many people do not service their regs on a yearly basis.

...even if we were, there is nothing wrong with grey market products anyway. What, you think the europeans get the rejects and us superior Americans have higher quality standards and we get only the good stuff?

You may want to read this article on grey market cameras,I found it quite informative when I recently bought a new camera.

Do you work in a dive shop?

I just thought I recognized the story. The truth is, while some LDSs may rip you off charging you $25.00 per service kit, the wholesale on those kits is more like $5.00 or less. While Diveinn was offering SP kits, their retail price was $5.00 to $12.00. And you failed to mention that almost all shops charge for the service. $50.00 to $100.00 per rig will usually do it. But I have found that I can go 3 to 5 years between a full service, with good routine care and some minor adjustment. So, if you run those numbers, the "warrenty" may never pays off.

I have had good service from LP. The only problem is that sometimes they are slow. For example, last month the zipper broke on the wetsuit I bought from them last March. I called and they said to ship it to them, they would work with the mfg to repair and return. It now looks like it will be another 2 weeks before I get it back. If I had known at the time I would have taken it to a shop in Monterey. They would have turned it around in a week and charged about $25 to fix. But the reality is that LP will fix it or replace it, just not as fast as it would have been at my LDS. On the other hand, the suit was about $100 less through LP than at my LDS.

OTOH, I have bought fins, gloves, boots, masks, etc through LP. Warrantee isn't as big an issue. I have also had no problems with returns. I have also returned things (fins, a BC, a mask, other odd and ends) Credits are always issued quickly, no hassles, no restock fees.

As to the BP/W, I recommend reading the posts in the BC section. The current hot wing is the Oxycheq and the FredT BP (made by one of the board regulars) is a favorite among the folks on the board.... (note this opinion not based on personal experience but rather based on reading many posts hear abouts. I don't have a BP/W to call my own... yet)

Welcome to the board, it is a great place to learn.

Brian,

Were not talking about cameras.........I mean, we are now but that was not my take.

How did i know this was going to turn into a hot potato subject? ;)

Thanks for the advice to think about before purchasing any gear at LP or my LDS. I understand the position, which was not the case before i bought my camera! I will consider the warranty offered before i buy any stuff that i have to depend upon and get serviced from them - particularly as we move around the country.

As for the camera, it wasnt all that expensive, enough to dent my pocketbook, but replaceable, and knowing how quickly people move on from their first cameras, i am sure by the time it fails/breaks the next one will be in the budget!

Thanks again, Simon
