anyhow - i see this as a useful formum despite me having green fins and not being DIR, I sometimes do follow the threads. I lend my support to those who see it a bit like the Solo or Hunting forums - not to discuss if the subjects are good or bad (or you agree/disagree) but to discuss the topic.

I find it fascinating that people think this forum is over-moderated. Since the significant change in moderator ranks that occurred last year, I really have been the only person doing much moderation in any of the DIR forums, and I've mostly been stomping all over SoCal and not doing much here. The thread on steel tanks that I waded into the other day was the first thread I've really touched here in quite some time. And I did it because I realized I wasn't doing what UP and Snowbear and others WERE doing when they were here, which is getting rid of the noise.

I think, if this forum is to be any different at all from the general tech or general scuba forums, it has to be moderated, and my personal view is that posts like texdiveguy's are the ones to be removed, as they are not simply offering information which might be wrong (according to what GUE or AG teaches) but actively arguing AGAINST the procedures which are being taught in DIR classes. THAT kind of thing shouldn't be here, I don't think. And anything which is angry or insulting or sarcastic shouldn't be here, either (except for some of Jeff's humor, which can be entertaining ).

If that much isn't done, I agree -- All the threads here degenerate to poo-flinging, do little or nothing to educate anybody, and make all involved come away with a bad taste in their mouths. I don't think that's what UP intended when he created this place and set its rules.

Over moderation may be a bad term. I think of it more as limited subject scope.

Once upon a time, DIR was only discussed online by people who were lemming like. They knew what do do, but not why. I rarely see that these days. Almost everyone I've seen discuss DIR in recent years have understood what they were doing any why. They were doing what they were doing because they believed ir was the best method and they had reasons, not just because it's DIR.

OTOH, these days, I do frequently see the lemming like approach in non-DIR areas. That's they way they were taught in their IDC, so it must be the best.

I'm not DIR and I never will be, but I much prefer the DIR approach to the vast majority of what I see today.

If you are a thinking DIR diver and someone uses "herd" "flock" or "lemming" to you, just sit back and laugh. The joke is on them.

You are welcome to your narrow ideas and DIR philosophy...it just gets at you that a lot of divers like myself don't buy into this flock mentality---that we are able to make decisions and choices on our own without having to conform to someone else mind set of ways to do it right....and I to have no intention of getting in a pissing match with you. PS---I do use the GUE Deco Planner 3. software for all my staged deco diving!

This is the very issue right here.

Key to the art of moderating is distinguishing between something like texdiveguy's arguing against DIR procedures vs. someone asking for the reasoning behind a procedure, and even going to the next step and pointing out fallacies or holes in that logic, and looking for further clarification.

Obviously, there will always be posts that fall into the grey zone between blatant trolling and honest discussion, but the attitudes shown by a poster in the past help a lot in figuring out what's what.

At some point a moderator just has to do what she's gotta do.

The solo forum has worked out pretty well. It used to be that any mention of solo diving would bring out the "you're gonna die!" crowd and the ensuing arguments would overwhelm the original question and answers. The same method should work for DIR, although as I've noted before, I think there are signficant advantages to NOT making it an opt in only forum.

Absolutely. It speaks volumes on that persons knowledge of DIR and their ability to see things with an open mind.
