LOL...Given the fact that I was once banned from the DIR forum, I find this quite funny.
Probably the funniest thing that's ever happened on ScubaBoard, actually ... :rofl3:

The Gods of Irony must love you and your cat ... ;)

That must explain why I got a separated shoulder last week and was bitten twice by hornets last night.

Folks; aren't we taking ourselves a bit too seriously? After all, as long as a person doesn't use the DIR forum to rant against DIR and conforms to the TOS who cares what is said?

If a person wants an authoritative answer they have to go to a DIR instructor or one of the DIR agencies? The rest is just discussion of how a thinking diver applies DIR philosophy to their own personal diving.

Scubaboard is a Discussion Board. It is not the source of holy writ; although comments here may point someone to finding that source.

Leave this forum as it is and don't sweat the small stuff.

Couldn't agree more.

Well, I've been chatting with cerich, who is going to be giving me a hand looking at the DIR threads, so hopefully there will be a more balanced job of moderation with his input.

For all it's worth, my first encounter with the whole DIR thing was right here. It made me do my homework, read further and continue to do so, while trying to apply some principles & things I learned to my diving. So, it definetly makes sense to keep it around.

Walter:
OTOH, these days, I do frequently see the lemming like approach in non-DIR areas. That's they way they were taught in their IDC, so it must be the best.

I'm not DIR and I never will be, but I much prefer the DIR approach to the vast majority of what I see today.

And because of this very thing I decided to take GUE-F in February 2008, instead of doing a PADI/SSI/some agency AOW course or similar. Will I go DIR, I don't know, probably not to the full extent, so you can say no (after all it is holistic, all or nothing), but I sure am interested to hear, try & learn something that does stick out quality wise in comparison to the average norm.

Keep it and kick out the rabid anti DIR comments. It just seems that the name irks a lot of people when they hear it, myself included. But it's had a very positive effect on my diving just reading this forum. I would guess it's done the same to many others who haven't even taken a class in GUE, like me. It's all good.

A bit late, but my vote is for keeping it pretty much as it is. Moderate out the flames, and those who want to argue that DIR divers are idiots or whatever and leave the rest. I learned about DIR here, got signed up for Fundies with Lynn's help and have learned quite a bit. Not a DIR diver, nor likely to ever be one, but the forum is very useful and has informed my diving considerably. The questioning about the minutia is somewhat tireing the 35th time, but as someone new to DIR I only see the 35th time so it is new to me and useful.

Most of us are grownups and can filter out the idiots pretty quickly. Don't need to over moderate - lean to overinclusion rather than over editing.

Fundies was one of the best diving courses I have done and I wouldn't have found it without this forum.

The DIR forum lost its initiator and its overseers with the departure of Uncle Pug and Snowbear. I've seen it get diluted and unfocused ...
I donno' about that. Look at the topics of the current threads on pages 1 and 2, and then go look back a few years at say, pages in the 80's and 90's, and I think you'll see the same kinds of DIR questions being addressed. Sure, I really miss some of the people who were here, and I'm also really glad to see the new ones, like you, Lynne. Change is good, as is the ebb and flow of a forum. There is still good information and there are still trolls and ridiculous arguing. But I just finished hosting a fundies class yesterday in our little town, and two of the fellows who came out of the class - their diving changed forever - discovered DIR right here on ScubaBoard.

The death of this forum is greatly exaggerated.
