I have been visiting this board for the last 7 months and being new to the scuba world found it a good source of info and a great place to listern/read and learn as i have valued lots of recomendations/advice from various people on this forum. There has been highs and lows,i've even enjoyed the humour and some times it was not started out this way. BUT recently it has gone real bad and there seems to be who can give a bloody nose competition.I am an outsider from the UK and may not understand your ways and culture but i think i have found the solution....

WRITE TO JERRY SPRINGER !!!!

Hell i would watch it .

I thought we all had a common interest which is diving ,which we love and enjoy with a passion..

MAL...

Members from the UK are not outsiders, members are from all over the world and we have several fron the UK.

I must have missed the bloody nose competition. If you watch Jerry Springer, our tastes are vastly different, but I'm glad to see you are interested in improving the quality of the board. Please PM me or any regulator if you see any area that needs attention. Those areas include personal attacks and sexual situations, including jokes, that are unsuitable for children. We treat each other with respect, but we welcome differences of opinion. We can disagree without resorting to bloody noses.

Personally, i've only been on scuba board for a few weeks.

I was really happy to find a board full of divers that care about thier sport and can be a great knowledge base for those of us new to the sport.

Unfortunatley I'm already questioning it's value bacause of the inability of some people onth board to control themselves.

I understand that the power of DIR is strong and that The principles behind it are extremely well thought out, however all of us have the right to dive and ask questions about diving without being hammered about backplates and long hoses and how great they are.

Either the regulators are going to have to lay down a stricter law concerning redundancy and insults.

the linear nature of this board requires us to stay on topic because good information becomes very hard to extract form flame wars and posted information that could easily be gleaned from the GUE website without wasting the boards time.

I'm seriously hoping that a solution can be found. Perhaps a DIR forum would help some because it would make for a proper place for some discussions while giving divers a place to ask DIR/ BP/Wings questions.

Please don't take this as me being against DIR/BP/wings. I might go that way eventually. I just want to see a board that's more useful to all of us.

thank you for your onsideration,
Rice

We have a vocal group of DIR members on this board. I rarely see them making personal attacks. If you are aware of any, let me know. Personal attacks are not tolerated.

It sounds like you may be interested in restricting the free flow of ideas and opinions. They day that happens is my last day on the board. I may not like your opinion, but I'll defend your right to express it.

If you are asking about BC's, a back plate and wings is one type of BC for you to consider. People who like that set up will suggest it's use. I, personally, do not see the advantage and perfer a vest, but the back plate with wings is an excellent option.

Thank you Walter. Let's also not forget that just because you dive a backplate, and use a long hose, you are not automatically DIR. What else would you have restricted to the DIR forum? Cannister lights, Jet Fins, bottom timers, etc etc????

James,

Excellent points. You can use equipment that DIR also uses without being DIR.

I agree that the flaming is out of line but I think you will notice that there are only a few that result to that behavior. If a question is asked about BC's a BP and Wings is an appropriate suggestion.

The recent arguements usually result from someone who is opposed to this idea flaming who ever suggested it. I agree that flaming in return is not necessary,

I believe that is a good thing that people who post here are exposed to set ups that they might not hear about elsewhere. I also think that it is good that some might post an opinion that they don't agree. Then the original poster can make a decision based on the various view points. This can all be done in a friendly and respectful manner and no flames need result.

Dive Safe.

hear about the reason behind the recommendations. this method of communicating could be misconstrued as the person offering the help as being overly opinionated or pushing a preference too much.

i personally am okay with getting an opinion or suggestion and the reason behind it.

sometimes, though, when a question has been asked, the answer might be a bit terse, hence be perceived as mindless repeating of a mantra. so i take it with a grain of salt, check the poster's profile and find out a bit more about the person. just so i can gauge the feedback a bit better.

and as one of those weird ones out, trust me that the equipment associated with a particular following does not necessarily signify one as a follower.

i've been asked if i cave, i DIR or do commercial. fact is, i don't do either of those. i just happen to like the equipment for a combination of reasons ... which i occasionally share on the board.

my equipment and techniques too get the benefit of 'tweaking' as a result of what i read here, to the extent that i try it out, as well as refence back to my prev instructors.

so in oter words, we can make the board what we want it to be. we can glean from it, and contribute to it, and make this a fun website to visit.

the other day I noticed several posts where two members who often get in some very heated arguments actualy were agreeing on some things .I wont say their names but I am sure every one who has read many posts at all has seen a disagreement between them but my point is we can disagree on many things and leave it behind when we get to a topic we agree on. I think the regulators do a pretty good job of keeping things in line .there is no reason for everyone to agree on everything . I am happy we even agree on anything .

i hope you caugh the subtle humor there :D.

things get a little tense when the discussion gets prolonged and there's an elongated time-span before said web-colleagues converge on agrements or agree to disagree on some points.

i don't envy the role of the regulators - at which point do you let lively discussion go forth, and when do you go 'now now, this has gone far enough' and steer us back toward the land of happy harmony.

differences in opinion does help challenge the status quo, and that is one of the wonderful things you can learn on here.
