That is the one where George gave a WKPP presentation, and held the microphone to his mouth and kept his bicep muscle flexed the whole time. To me the presentation was less impressive as the thought, this much muscle tetany ,he is going to have a major cramp.Yup.
Do you not remember the cavers list? As soon as Al invented the internet, it seems that cave divers started trashing each other on it. Happily, I think it's restricted to North Florida. I hardly hear anyone trashing instructors in Riviera Maya, or techniques, or anything else. Yes, there was some grumbling about missing arrows and cookies years ago. I don't get into cave diving for a couple of reasons. One is that I'd be right there in the middle of it with everyone else. Ain't no one got time for that.
I think part of it is that Cave Diving is exclusive, where other types are inclusive. To cave dive (and not die) you need hours and days and weeks and years of training and practice. I have no wreck certifications, yet I can still feel included in a wreck dive even if I'm only interested in playing around on the outside, and I don't want to bring back a porthole. To cave dive, you must join a clique (or cult), spend an inordinate amount of time in the group, and still maybe not be accepted.
This is nothing new. There are multiple philosophies of thought on different things, and people are passionate about certain ways. I have seen people get into fist fights about their personal views. For example, there is one school of though that line arrows face the nearest exit, and there are those that feel they need to face the direction of your travel. These to philosophies can be diametrically opposed, and can cause safety issues (and have). The real pity is I have seen people take their opinion too far, make changes while people are in the cave, and endanger people. If I'm reading this correctly, cave divers are actually trying to kill each other by tampering/removing/sabotaging each other's cave line markers ?
The arrows thing was a long time ago, like almost 20 years. There was a place in Mexico that replaced the majority of line arrows in well traveled caves with arrows advertising their rental condo complex. Someone took umbrage and replaced them with a bunch of pink arrows. It's possible that a few were not replaced in the process.
I remember when that was ongoing in the 90's and diving those systems at that time. Funny thing is I have a personal cave diving history box that I stick iconic items, eg Exley backup light, Eckhoff spool, Berman deco wet note book etc. One item is one of the line arrow war arrows. I remember diving there before knowing about the wars, and on a dive being handed a handful of line arrows to start swapping them out, without an explanation. I remember getting home and reading an article in the NACD journal about the line arrow wars, and realizing I was complicit.
