In deciding for appropriate reading for our trip to Thailand I think I found some worthwhile books...

1) Lonely Planet Thailand's Islands & Beaches (Lonely Planet Thailand's Island and Beaches)
by Joe Bindloss, Wendy Taylor
Diving: The World's Best Sites
by Jack Jackson

2) Lonely Planet Diving & Snorkeling Thailand (Diving & Snorkeling)
by Mark Strickland, John Williams

these should also be helpful... in the longterm

3) The Unofficial Guide to the World's Best Diving Vacations
by Jean Pierce, Brenda Fine

4) The Rapture of the Deep: And Other Dive Stories You Probably Shouldn't Know
by Michael G. Zinsley

5) Dive Atlas of the World: An Illustrated Reference to the Best Sites by Jack Jackson (Editor)

Only problem I found with the Lonely Planet Guide Books was their innacuracies re prices for accom. In a lot of areas this seems to fluctuate season to season and even within a matter of weeks, ie. on Koh Tao prices can go up a lot just after the full moon party on Koh Phang Ngan as people tend to island hop to Tao.

Apart from prices though I found the Lonely planet guides invaluable as a source of info and planning what I wanted to do out there.
