Maybe for deco or safety stops. Or to make someone jealous by updating them on the amazing things you've seen.

But seriously, it's unneeded, unless you're a tech diver making a significant deco stop. During my recreational safety stops, there's plenty to see, and it's only a few minutes or so of fun buoyancy practice.
 
Give it time and you will be able to take a picture and instantly upload it to the internet while at depth.
There are already few solutions that allow you to share images on facebook as soon as you reach the surface.

Fully agree. Most divers I have seen are already pretty crappy at buddy contact. I think this would just make it worse. Being able to text "I'm Out of Air" doesn't do you a lot of good if your buddy is out of site.
 
I am also one that enjoys the peace and quiet I get while underwater. As for texting messages at depth, that sounds like a horrible idea. It is just another distraction that could turn a good dive into a bad one.
