I thoroughly enjoy my 40-60 minutes of peacefulness underwater. If something needs to be said it can usually be conveyed with hand signals or if the person is a real PITA wet notes. Past that I probably really don't give a flying goldfish what you have to say and I sure as heck wouldn't want to be looking at some electronic device the whole dive when I could be looking at fishies!
I wish they would have a mobile device so I could watch YouTube videos or troll ScubaBoard when I'm doing my long deco stops. It would be better than watching endless blue green abyss all around you. Plus like a social media crap they have out there, I would give up to date status during the boring stops also.
Even though texting is quiet and diving is social, I don't see the reason to mix the two. I can't imagine people trying to dive while texting, people walking down a street (something we've done since we could walk) is hard enough for most with their heads buried in their phones.
I like the quiet time as much as the next guy, but I can see there would be some useful applications. I suspect this device would be most useful to dive teams that needed a form of communication to complete a task or remain compliant with OSHA or Workplace regs. Dive operators would find it useful to warn their charges of emergent hazards or to recall divers. Instructors could program surprise scenarios in for students. Divers unsure of where the boat is could navigate back to it, or find a live boat on a drift. The list goes on....
Take the AT&T pledge. Don't text and Dive. When you don't pay attention and start texting your trim goes to S*** and next thing you know your past your MOD. Lol.
I like the idea of being able to send a message this way if/when my buddy is out of sight---most banger/clanger/horn style signal devices just can't be heard most of the time and don't convey much info. The system linked was way too pricey the last time I looked at it though.
