Where is this? I would love to dive a stream with deep holes (if that's what this is). Thanks.

I have not dove it myself but have walked around there. I have been told divers go there to look for lost things as alot people swim there in the summer. Suppose to be quite cold though.

"Sinks - Great Smoky Mountains Nat' Park, Tennessee

http://www.smokyphotos.com/photo67.htm One of my favorite local dive sites. The Sinks have been thought to be "bottomless," but I can tell you that is totally untrue. We have spent many hours in the Sinks and can assure you it's only 17 feet deep at its deepest stop!"

The way we would get there is once your in Gatlinburg and first enter the Smoky Mountains on US 441 go to the Sugarlands Visitor area insdie the park. Take the road to the right, Little River Road, and drive on that for several miles and the sinks is on the left, there should be a sign telling where it is. Here is a map that shows it better then I can describe. http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/upload/trails2005.pdf

Is their any problem with Scuba diving or metal detecting there? The Sinks are only about 5 miles from our cabin. It looks like I will get some diving in Tennessee in October. Thanks for all the indo.

As far as I know scuba diving should be fine there. But metal detecting in a National Park is a big NO. They frown upon that quite heavily from what I have been told. I think there is another place called the Y where alot swim at and a little bit away is another rock where people dive off of in the summer to swim. Most of those rivers though in the National Park are very shallow with many rocks and rapids.

Hey James,
Since I own one of cabins (Lake Mist) I can give you permission. Let me know when you want to check it out or wait til we get up there in Oct. I'll let the company that manages the property for me know that a "friend" on mine will be there (Little Green Brier). The lake has a very high berm on the north end, so I'd bet the lake is at least 25-30 feet deep. I've heard that it was a popular for years as a spring fed swimming lake so it might be good for treasure hunting???? Be careful.

I'll be doing the sinks for sure in October. It should be interesting. The "Y", I think is in Townsend, which is probably OK for detecting.

Well, you should start your rain dance now. The Little River is ridiculously low right now due to the intense drought in ET. I'd be willing to bet the "Y" is way less than 10 ft deep right now. The Sinks are at least as bad.

Hi Gary,

Would it be ok for me and my dive buddy Brent to check it out this Sunday, Lake Marion? I just sold a Tesoro Tiger Shark metal detector on ebay, though I only used it once, it seemed if a person was patient enough they could find some jewelry. If you detect in the TVA Lakes around here you will need a permit, which are free, and just fill out the application. http://tva.gov/river/recreation/metaldetect.htm http://tva.gov/river/recreation/metal_detect.pdf

I think boomster is right, I was not taking into consideration the drought we are in, so that would greatly affect the Little River up in the mountains.

Sure, you can dive there. I'll need to send you a Waiver of Liability after I modify it for diving. Also, I have a renter in my cabin thru Sunday morning so if you need to wash off your gear wait til Sunday afternoon. I have to call the reantal managent company when you know for sure when you go. If you wait until next weekend my place isn't rented. Anyway I'll get the form to you and if you can FAX it back I'll advice everybody that you'll be there.

I'm really interested in the detail of you dive. If it good, come back in Oct.
