Awesome, I see golem gear sells them for 1100 and i think scubatoys has them for 1200. Ill dive tables and what not till i have enough money to buy a wicked computer!

Chris,

This is coming from someone who has a vr3 and likes it. Where you are at - stick to the basic BT and tables. Once you get through the classes, you will be in a MUCH better position to evaluate your needs for a computer.

Me, I use the VR3 for Cave dives, mostly because its a pain sometimes to model the caves because they are anything but a square profile. I also have 'adjusted' the schedule it called for. Specifically, changing the location of the deep stops. Computer complains a bit but still computes deco information. I also tend to extend the 15-20 foot 02 stop. I do carry backup tables to bailout to if need be and I do monitor my profile throughout the dive to be able to pickup with tables at any point of need be.

Now, when I dive OW square profiles (deep), I tend to plan the dive with Dplan or Jplan on the palm. I then keep the tables with me and refer to them when doing the deco. I still dive the VR3 but will adjust the deep stops to my liking.

They are out there for sale for a good price, plus Dive Rite has always allowed people to upgrade to the newer model for a fee. I bet you could nab a very good deal on a Nitek HE,and then later leverage it for something else.

How about a apeks quantom? It has a two gas mix and what not, anyone hear much on them?
Chris

HybridDiver, perhaps it would be better to wait until you have picked out an instructor for advanced training, and then discuss it with him.

While computers have lots of advantages for recreational diving, when you start doing dives that are as much driven by the gas planning as by the deco planning (and of course the two are intimately intertwined), then the flexibility of the computer doesn't add as much value.

Ya, I dont have an instructor near me. Im going to have to fly some where to get the training which will cost alot more onto the trip. Thats why im starting here and moving onto gear.

I have an Apeks Quantum (same a DiveRite Duo and Tusa IQ700). Two gas (50% & 99%), guage mode, user settable fresh/salt water, user changeable battery, fixed PO2 of 1.4. It runs a Buhlman algo (modified, basically padding). Dive planning feature. Hold up to 60 hrs of dive profiles (I think)

No issues with this whatsoever, have had it for over 4 years.

Thank you, I may buy a apeks quantum and run it in guage mode and then for rec diving run it as a computer!
