LOL! I'm no pro. Maybe the other guys are.
Yeah, we're not pros- just guys on the internet with nothing better to do with our time :D

I think you should start with the bottom timer and tables first. Even with a computer, you will still need them as backup, in case the computer fails.

PerroneFord:
When you use a computer, you are generally locked into whatever software THEY feel is best for you.
With the VR3, am I correct in my understanding that it is upgradeable to different algorithms?

Jim

Thank you guys, I learned alot here. I will start using tables and a timmer in my normal dives to get used to looking at it with keeping my skills up.

As far as I know, there is only one algorithm upgrade available (VPM) and it's implementaiton has not been well recieved. The two divers with whom I spoke face to face about it, had both upgraded, then removed it.

Both were doing mixed gas diving on CCR between 150 and 250 feet.

Perrone, out of curiosity, what software do you use to cut your tables with?

V-Planner by Ross Hemingway.

Seems to be the more popular piece of software from what I've noticed. I bought it last year at the advice of one of my instructors, just to play with it and get used to use before I start my deco course this summer. So far I've been pretty impressed with it, and how easy it is to navigate and use.

It's the best I've used. I have not used the GUE software but understand it's excellent as well.

There are some things about VPlanner I don't care for, but such is life.

V-planner, I have used that before the demo version. I find it very good software

When we did our planning from tables they are just the Navy ones for air dives. Gas switches, like some of the other guys mentioned the software programs are good. We do alot of dives at attitude and the VR takes care of that (one less thing to worry about). Like I said b/4 the planning of it is great, just transfer the info to your wrist slate w/ a contengany plan...grab a bottom timer and your off.

I don't use the VPM, just the Bulh. It also gives you the deep water microbubble stops. One thing that kinda sold me was a guy diving in our group blew threw both his plan and his conting b/c he was so narced. The inst. in our group had to go get him (so he also blew threw both plans) The VR got him out of it with no worries, otherwise he would have been pulling out tables and going thru more brain damage in an otherwise difficult time.

P.S. when are we going to start a 12 step program for us scubaboard junkies?

Take the classes, use the tables and a few timers to start. Then once you learn it go for one. Otherwise you kinda speed learn and its just to easy to press a button, have the answer and not know how you got there. IMHO,, either way enjoy yourself
