Ken Kurtis:
Someone broke into the Reef Seekers shed Friday morning (using a pair of bolt cutters) and stole about 10 of our aluminum rental tanks. All the tanks are marked "RSD" and all have "AL80" written on them (in Magic Marker).

If anyone should offer to sell you one of these or if they try to get a fill, could you please let me know. We have sold some of our rentals, but we have a list of the buyers and I'd like to nail whoever did this. Thanks.

I dont know you well Ken, but I have bought stuff from you in the past and this blows.
What the heck kind of moron is going to break into somewhere to steal some dive tanks that you'd probably rent them for barely nothing if they asked nicely?

What a bunch of tossers as we'd say where I come from.

Who said they were smart? May they be cursed with untreatable hemorrhoids.

i am just imagining these fools running down the street with 30lb tanks slung over thier shoulders while being chased by cops... what a nice sight.

drbill:
It wasn't me, Ken... I dive steel and wouldn't steal Al tanks!

but wouldja steal steel Dr B? :D Just kidding.

Good luck getting your tanks back Ken... I can't stand thieves :shakehead

You don't think they were divers? How else would they know where to go and what to take?
It's an odd thing to steal, but I'd bet whoever did it was a diver.

Still, that really sucks and it's a pretty retarded thing to do. I'm sure they'll be caught in due time.

The theft of recyclable metals has risen sharply with the rise of prices. It’s not uncommon to see thefts of large quantities of copper, brass and aluminum today. Companies like Edison, Verizon along with suppliers of aluminum tubing, tanks and bulk metal are getting hit hard. The sad part is the recyclers and buyers of scrap do not check for ownership, the just weight and pay.

A colleague of mine lost an entire 30’ tall sign. They took the sign apart and sold it for scrap. I found it two days later at a local scrap yard, call police, they did nothing about it. A local park lost all of the wire used to light and service the park. Edison had an entire trailer, loaded with aluminum wire stolen from their yard, it also showed up at a recycler the next day. The thieves were arrested, not because they had the wire, but because they abandoned the trailer 6 blocks from the Edison yard, in front of a policeman’s home. He called it in and followed them to the recycler.
I suspect that the thieves that stole the aluminum tanks have already sold them for scrap.

We actually think we have a lead and that they were stolen by paintballers.

As most of you know, we've lost our lease so we're selling everything (and I mean everything) just in case we can't quickly relocate (and it doesn't look good right now). We got a call 10 days ago (while I was at Cocos) from some guys who wanted to but tanks to use for reloading paintball guns. They wanted aluminum because of the higher pressure. My guys told them we couldn't sell them tanks unless they were certified divers or without my expressed permission.

They called a couple of times, the most recelty being last Thursday. They were again told we couldn't sell to them and they seemed rather upset about it. The next morning the theft occured and the ONLY things taken out of our shed were all the aluminum tanks that were in there. Steel tanks (inlcuding a brand new HP100), wetsuits, and even some regs were in the shed.

So we're going on the PO'd paintbaler theory. The cops will be checking our phone records against when we think the calls came in to see if we can nail these guys.

In the meantime, if you see anyone offering to sell a Reef Seekers alumnium rental tank, let me know (then whack them with paint!!!!).

:-)

I hope you get them back but I wouldn't expect too much out of the police. I've dealt with several police departments locally regarding thefts and they usually take the information and file the report, that's it. I hope your local PD operates differently.

TxHockeyGuy, you obviously have never met Ken, my vote is with Ken! :D

Yeah, but those thefts were all out in the open and visible, right? And with Ken's tanks being in a small nondescript shed, somebody would have to be aware of its contents to target it for aluminum, so it seems odd that roving aluminum thieves would have spotted it on a trip to the shop if they weren't divers (or paintballers, as seems to be the case. Not impossible, just unlikely.
I wonder if they'd know they have to drain the tanks? Scary stuff in the hands of somebody who might drop it and crack a valve open or something

Anyways, it's nice to know that they have a lead with the paintballers. Good luck, Ken!!
