Does anyone know the real degrading-mechanism that affects aluminum bottles?

Pitting is not only a dynamic issue.

My guess is that crevice corrosion is the big issue here. Even 316 stainless can have up to .010" per year of corrosion in saltwater, with a crevice. Saltwater can work its way up to the oring seal surface between the tank and valve. Then start doing its dirty deed. If the corrosion can make a channel along the ID of the tank neck a leak path can form.

I'll have to review my vision, this seams indeed to be a good suspect.
