Greetings fellow divers

I have a couple of used tank boots that I want to use due to their lower profile which allows me to raise my tank a bit.

But... since they are used, they do have a bit of rust on the ribs lining the interior of the boot. Before anyone says, "just buy new ones", these are in otherwise good shape and I am into recycling if possible.

I've used CLR to get rid of the vast marjority of the rust stains, but my concern is this. Will the rust migrate to my steel tanks if I am unable to get rid of all of it?

Curious as to what your thoughts are. My tanks are HDG.

Thanks everyone!

And why wouldn't you persist and get rid of all of it

Did you know CLR consists of Phosphoric Acid and lots and lots of water

Nope! I did not. I will persist. But it's a lot of persisting.

Phosphoric acid is good for everything I have a few gallons, feel free to come over and grab a cup to experiment

zero persisting required

I took the easy route. I bought a couple of steels that had been sitting for a while. Got them hydroed and then started to clean them up a bit. A bit of residue on the boots, and around the tanks. Galvanized tanks, so the actual steel was fine. Scotch brite pad for the tanks and that worked fine.

I just threw the boots in the pool for a while. Rinsed them after. Most came out nice and clean. A couple went for another soak.

If I put a temporary sheet of tin on the roof without cutting out all the old rust it jumps out and eats really fast

It's worse than covid
