Exactly..
where would trip reports and conditions go??

Quoted by El:

It depends. If you're just posting information for your own group, then the club forum would be the best location. On the other hand, if you want to share the info with other divers, the relevant (sub)forum would be the best location.
El is directly responding to the question "where would trip reports and conditions go??" It says nothing about planning trips.
BTW, glad you are such a good spokesperson for the Tampa area. Glad to hear so many have decided to join ScubaBoard and are on trips because of you. :)

I didn't read her post to mean anything of the sort. It simply stated that new people were joining in the Tampa Bay area, and that Missd and others are making sure they get a good start... nothing like what you are attempting to state

Thanks for moving my posting! Now I have to tell all these people on the big board that a) I don't know who they are and as a rule need to know something about them before I let them on MY, repeat MY BOAT. b) have to tell them that I don't have room for them anyway c) that I will not wait for them even though they are driving from BFE, and d) have to worry that even more people will know who I am and that I'm not home and come in and help themselve to my stuff. Are you insured in case I have to sue you for my losses? What are you going to tell the person who broke down on Aligator alley when I wouldn't wait 4 more hours for them? Are you going to reimburse me for the gas money that person would have added to the kitty? (And the Wake burns a LOT of Gas!)

Have you put any thought into just moving postings around?

(Accompanied by the sound of steam coming out of my ears.....)

While we understand that a few of you may have misunderstood the restructuring of the Conch Divers forum or may not agree with it, 2 mods and an advisor have made it clear that this is what the vote was designed to decide. This decision was reached by an overwhelming majority of the Florida Conch Divers (45-21) & is now in effect. All trips are to be posted in the main Trips & Marketplace forum.

FYI- Typically, forum restructuring is not something that El Orans decides on his own- it is reviewed by the advisors & is sometimes, as in this case, put to a vote by the members of the forums in question. Once a decision is made, El Orans is tasked with implementing what is decided. Although El Orans is THE man behind the magic :D, he is not the arbiter of board policy. Given the many fantastic enhancements he has made & the way he adroitly manages the day to day tasks required of an admin, it is easy to see why many may misunderstand his role. Certainly, that must be the case here since this is a decision that was reached among the Conchs themselves.

We know that this decision will not suit all of the Conchs- no decision probably ever will- but it was made after much discussion among the forum members & after a clear majority vote was reached. As the Conchs continue to grow, we will, of course, revisit the forum structure & there is always the possibility that it will change again down the road to better suit the needs of the community at a whole but at this time it has been determined by the community itself that all Florida trips & happenings should be posted in one central location.

I support Frogman's position that the Boat Owner should be the sole decider of where to post a trip on their boat (with in reason). Inviting others on to a private boat is risky for the Capt and or Owner. We should not do anything to discourage this act of generosity.

I think a reasonable person would expect private boat trips to be in the related "club" subforum rather than the main forum unless the owner explicitly invites any/all. Trips on Commercial boats or public areas should be in main forum.

I also think it fits El's condition of "posting information for your own group". Frogman clearly is reluctant to have people outside his group on his boat (a reasonable prerogative given the risks)

Scubaboard is for everybody. If one chooses to have invite only certain friends, then private emails is a much better venue to communicate.

I own a private boat (not a charter service). I post my outings in the Tampa forum because I am interested in meeting and inviting local divers to go out on my boat.

Having spent 9 years in Army transportation I know the difficulties of getting people organized when they are all within sight and you have the ability to begin court martial proceedings, let alone people you've never seen from god-knows where.

About suing, I was only kidding (maybe.....)
My boat is in a canal behind my house. I have already told everyone who care to read the forum I have two expensive hobbies. A posting for an outing tells them exactly when I won't be home. I prefer to keep the circle who knows exactly where I live relatively small. You can't be too careful these days.

Lastly the is the issue of my liability. If a diver is injured on my boat, will I end up loosing my boat? My home? Another reason for keeping my circle relatively small and to divers I know something about.

Then, the policy needs to be revisited (quickly) concerning private boat owners and their trip posts. Everything was good to go on the board, until someone moved the private boat owner's trip post into the larger area based on this policy.

Now, because you choose to state that it is policy, you move the post from a place where the private boat owner is comfortable with it's posting, place it in an area where the boat owner is not comfortable in having it, and then tell them that if they want to invite people out in the future, that they should use private emails. Why? Because that's the way that YOU feel it is much better on the board?

That makes no sense if Scubaboard is for everybody, especially in this case, where there is a large group of "certain friends". The area posted is the perfect place for the post. Everyone interested in going could see it, and decide whether they could make the trip. This is much better than the boat owner having to respond to every personal email once the boat is full, in order to tell would-be divers that they responded too late. I believe the policy needs to be revisited in the back room and soon

That's what we do. If we are doing an "exclusive" trip, usually hunting oriented we PM or call eachother, everything else gets posted.

Well, I guess I would expect that for a hunting trip... considering this is a scuba forum

Chip, it looks like Missd could use one of your sock puppets right now :D
