Just south of Venice (albeit a couple hour drive from St. Pete) is the phosphate dock on the south end of Boca Grande. It used to be a world-class dive (only place in the world you could dive off the beach and see 50-100 goliath grouper at one spot), but I am not sure what it is like now since they removed the decking. I imagine it is still pretty cool, but not like it used to be...
