I am looking for something that I can use to tame my hair while diving. I have longer hair but my main problem is that even if I put it in a braid it gets so tangled from the strap on my mask. I've been reading about a few different options including doo rags...etc. Any ladies out there use something they swear by??? I am tired of spending hours detangling my hair and looking like a lion coming out of the water. Thanks :)

Still tie that hair
Then use bandana or a hood

+1
and i put my ponytail/braid inside my suit. keeps me a little warmer this way too. :D
still a little tangling, but i just put my hair in a scarf after diving and don't worry about it since my head keeps growing more hair ;)

I haven't found the perfect solution, but this works fairly well for me:

1)Before the dive I braid my hair in either one or two braids.

2) I use a slap strap on mask (this is a strap with a neoprene section instead of rubber; there are some that slip over the existing strap or others that replace the existing strap). The neoprene is a LOT less "grabby" than the original strap.

3) After the dive and when I get back to to the lodging, I put conditioner on my hair as I'm getting into the shower and comb it out in the shower. Any tangles come out easily this way. (I just plop a cap on my head between dive and shower.)

4) Side note: I have heard people suggest putting conditioner on hair before the dive, but I don't do that as from what I have read it is harmful to the reef.

5) My hair was *constantly* getting tangled in my snorkel when it was mounted on my mask strap; now I either dive without it or secure it elsewhere on my rig.

Just wear a thin nylon dive hood.

Hmm . . . have you tried a swim cap? They're generally made of latex, and should do the job. Competitive swimmers use them to hold their hair flush against the skull, both to keep it out of their eyes and to reduce drag. One should run you about $10 at a good sports store, and they come in a variety of colors, prints, etc.

I know this is an older thread but figured I would give my 2 cents. I have medium length hair, it is long enough to get in my mask but too short to braid and tuck away. I tried a do rag with disastrous results. It managed to shimmy and slide all over my head and my mask came off. That incident has made me weary of any type of head cover. What has worked best for me is to put my hair in low lying pig tails(or braided pig tails). That way the bulkiness of a pony tail do not interfere with my mask.

If I do not contain my hair, I come out of the water looking like Chaka Khan:shocked2:. I also swear by Kiehl's Argan skin salve. This stuff is almost as hard core as wax. It stays in my hair after diving and keeps the highlights and Keratin straightening treatment in tact. It easily rinses out with very warm water and shampoo. Expensive, but a little goes a long way. Good luck.
