I'm flying into Cancun and set to arrive around 5pm. Should I take the bus/ferry route or wait for a 2.5hr layover at the airport for a flight to CZM? Seems the price of the ferry has gone up to about $18US and the bus ride would probably be about $10 so a total of about 30. The flight is the same price about $25-30. Is the Bus/ferry ride a chore or is it sort of interesting/more interesting than the puddle jumper?

My departure fly is at 6pm, again the same question about the return, would need to catch a flight at 2:55 or take the ferry/bus. Thanks in advance.

That is far from my experience. I'm sure it was less than $15 bus/ferry each way back in April. There is nothing fantastick about the bus/ferry route and you will have to haul your luggage about a quarter mile on the trip, but you can do the whole deal in less than 2 hours if the timing is right.

I'd fly coz I wouldn't want to be messin' with my gear on the ferry/bus/taxi etc to my hotel. But that's just me.

Maybe if it meant a big time difference, but not for a couple of hours.

$25-30 for the skip flight CUN=>CZM sounds extremely low to me; when I last checked, it was $85-100 each way. Also, if you catch the ferry schedule right, in 2.5 hr you could be on Cozumel having a margarita instead of cooling your heels in the Cancun airport.

There are also vans for hire that can be an economically viable alternative way to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun, depending on how many you have in your party. You can get the driver to stop for beer.

I agree. Can't believe the flight is only $30. That price might make it competetive with the bus/ferry.

Bus/ferry is relatively easy and cheap.

Flights were found on mexicana.com
$25US including tax CUN->CZM
$35US CZM->CUN

No advance purchase necessary. It's a few bucks more if you buy over the phone.

If you can get flights from Cancun to Cozumel for that cheap, then take 'em. If *I* could have found flights that cheap on my visits I would have flown, but what I found was a lot more like what the others have quoted.

To echo the comments made by others, you can easily make it to Cozumel from the Cancun airport in under 2.5 hours. In July 2004 I was on the island 2 hours and 15 minutes after the plane landed. That includes Imigration, Baggage Claim, Customs etc.

It can be a pain hauling gear to the Bus and to the Ferry. For a few bucks on each leg you can have someone haul your bags for you.

In July 2004 the Riviera Bus to Playa Del Carmen was $7 per person buying the tickets inside the airport. In June 2003 the bus was $8.

In July 2004 the ferry was 180 Pesos per person round trip, buying the tickets on the way to the pier. I think that it was 11o Pesos one way, but I won't swear to that. In June 2003 the ferry was cheaper by a couple bucks.

There are lots of alternatives, you just have to decide what is most important to you. I was willing to walk and schlepp gear in order to save money. YMMV

I am going to check into those Mexicana flights!
