Thanks for all the great info you provide throughout the Australian treads, it’s much appreciated. I was hesitant to post some of my own questions in the fear that you would be sick of giving advice to travelers. I’m glad I didn’t post because it forced me to look through historical threads, which have given me all the info I needed. I will be traveling to Australia on business in April and was uncertain what to do for diving. The big question I had - do I go to the GBR or not. My conference is in Coolum, which now I know is great for diving the HMAS Brisbane. My wife will be flying over on frequent flier miles either the week before or after my conference. This will be a real diving treat for us because we don’t always get in the water together because of our two kids. For the week my wife is with me, my parents have volunteered to watch them. Money is an issue so it would have been a huge commitment for us to go to the GBR while it will be cheap to stay in Sydney because we can stage out of my aunt and uncle’s house. From reading posts it appears that the diving around the Sydney area is great and should be very rewarding (correct me if I’m wrong). Thank again for all the suggestions for dive operations and sites around the Sydney area.

Cheers

hi DN and welcome to :sblogo:

i hope i can help!

now - as a local, i always say the GBR is very expensive for us locals to div (but hopefully Andrew Jones will be here soon with some insider info as he works in the industry at cairns)

hubby and i only going in august because we're getting a great deal from our travel agent as hubby is an instructor (the whole padi/travel thing)

IF it was me, and you dont mind basic accomodation, i would do:

hmas brisbane as you mentioned (i hear good things aboot scubaworld)

then, i would consider either a 3 day liveaboard via brisbane and dive morton bay; Big Cat Reality / Dive Tours of Moreton Bay

or

via brisbane i would head to north stradbroke island; Manta Lodge and Scuba Centre : Stradbroke Island and also dive morton bay. accom is backpackers but you can get a double room to yourself and diveshop underneath

i would def suggest byron bay but i dont know about the costs involved there.

i dont want to turn you off GBR, but i understand the cost x 2 people.

the trip i have in august at Lady Elliott is $1600AUDpp for 7 nights inc brekkie & dinner, 12 dives, airport transport from hervey bay in twin tent cabin accomodation (shared facilities)

hope this helps and ask if you have any questions

cheers

oh - and an OS trip - HOW EXCITING FOR YOU AND THE MRS :multi:

Thanks for the info. I was actually planning on spending most the time in the Sydney area so we can stay with my Aunt and Uncle. I was just thinking of trying to sneak in the HMAS Brisbanw while I was close but meet up with my wife in Sydney. My thanks was for your recommendation of scubaroos and the info you have provided for shore dives around your home turf. Much appreciated!!

Cheers
