Take a look at the map on this webpage for the "cycle trails" as a shortcut to return from Karpata without going through Rincon.

In 2003, the trail was good enough for the pickup truck and saved a lot of miles. Condition probably varies, so be advised first.

Plus, it gave a great new perspective of Bonaire as you can see in this pic:

Here's an aerial view of Bonaire's north end. If you look closely, you can see the cycle trails that loop back to the main road back to Kralendijk.

The cycle trail was in good shape last month. Watch carefully for the orange stone with the bicycle painted on it. It had been turned so you couldn't see the bike when we went. (we turned it so others would see it). It looks like they are broadening the shoulders in preparation for an upgrade of the road.

"Afterwards, I was describing this dive experience to a diver who is more experienced than I am. His eyes got real big when I told him that we swam right into the middle of the bait ball. He said you should never do that, that we were lucky we didn't get caught in a feeding frenzy and get bitten by the fish."........

I'm thinking someone was pulling your fin, I mean leg.......

Once, in the waters off Cape Ann, Massachusetts, I was in the middle of a school of dozens of crazed bluefish that were mauling the school of pollock around me.

Knowing bluefish, I made sure I didn't wiggle my tasty little smurf-glove blue fingers at that moment.

You only have to see them in a feeding frenzy to know they will strike at anything.

Maybe jacks in Bonaire are similar.... only three times the size....:D

In my book, blues & jacks are 2 different fish........check the teeth situation out......

Buddy of mine was in Cocos a few years ago. One guy was photographing a bait ball when a large Tuna emerged from it at speed and hit him full on the chest.Apparently caused extensive bruising and gave him quite a tale to tell.

Thanks. I obviously have no idea what was running through that bait ball in Bonaire (see the third pic I posted).

Whatever they were, they were pretty big. If they feed in a fashion similar to bluefish, I'll give them a wide berth! :)

Any idea what they might have been?

My fiance and I got a bait ball over in Florida while doing her O/W checkout dive on the Louisa tug there.... The ball we were watching was about 20" away then it swarmed us where we were at.. then it went crazy and some AJ's were working it, after it moved away a little bit a cuda went past us and started it's dinner..

Here in Saipan we see and dive with a bait ball of scad. While stationary near the bottom recently the ball moved over me from behind. Then suddenly they spooked in a whoosh, and three trevallies whizzed past my ears from behind so close I just heard a 'pop' . That gets the ol' blood pumping!
