I totally agree with HateCheese, I got a visual of this going around my head that I'll take to bed for sure.... what an experience! I think it's time I went to Bonaire!

Dave, those are three great pics from Karpata (one of my top three favorite dives on the island) thanks for posting!

Were those taken recently?

Thanks. I wish I had been ready when the predators were darting through the bait, making the baitball split apart. Couldn't quite get those shots! Darn. Memory will have to suffice.

It was July of 2003. A wonderful 2-week trip to Bonaire. No hurry, no worry, just peaceful diving on "island time". It stays fresh in my mind, even after 4 years.

I agree with you- Karpata was one of my favorites, too. Gliding over the steep ridges and canyons was wonderful.

Not to hijack the thread, but were you there more recently? Still a great dive destination?

Someday, I hope to go back. In the meantime, the pics and memories will have to do... :)

Karpata was one of the dives that we did last week. It was really nice. I don't know what it looked like pre-hurricane, but it's still a great dive. I would shore dive it more often, but I didn't care for the long drive around to get back. The one-way road confuses me. It didn't look any narrower than much of the "2-way" road. We did pass some people that ignored the 1-way signs and were coming back via the direct route.

Dave I was just there two weeks ago...Bonaire is truly a special place where you can do whatever you would like, at your own pace. My dive buddies and I could have done 30 dives over the course of the week...but instead we took a few days easy and only did 2 or 3...No rush...get up when you want to...go to be as late or early as you like...being able to just grab a tank from the shop and jump into the water, day or night and I love it!
This was our second trip in two years...and I would love to make it an annual tradition!

This year we took a day to explore the National Park on the North of the island, it is quite spectacular...plus there are some great snorkeling sites along the east-side beaches...we saw some old canons and old ship-chains in about 10-15 feet of water....Has anyone else come across those canyons on the south side of the bay in Playa Slagbaai?

One of my memorable dives was swimming through one in the keys!

Wow! Outstanding! I dive the Keys at least once a year. I'm envious because I've never seen this or seen a Keys post on something like this. Which key were you diving, do you remember site? What time of year? I'm going to Key Largo for 10 days in June and I'll be dreaming about this.

Anyone else encounter this in the keys and if so, where?

I have been in bait balls in the Keys and huge ones that extended from the bottom to the surface in 100 feet of water, like a fish tornado, out of Destin. I was in the eye of the storm watching the predators streak through the tornado through one curtain and then out the other, it was amazing.

Bonaire shortcut to return from Karpata.

Take a look at the map on this webpage for the "cycle trails" as a shortcut to return from Karpata without going through Rincon.

In 2003, the trail was good enough for the pickup truck and saved a lot of miles. Condition probably varies, so be advised first.

Plus, it gave a great new perspective of Bonaire as you can see in this pic:

Here's an aerial view of Bonaire's north end. If you look closely, you can see the cycle trails that loop back to the main road back to Kralendijk.
