There is nothing wrong with the computer, I have the same one and it's also 20 years old. It freaked out because the battery was old almost dead. That computer is awesome. I think it's the best one ever made. The new version is also great.
Hi Richard, thanks for the positive comment on the Vyper! I also think it's a fantastic computer and was very dependable. Just don't know how it will do since I haven't dived with it. Pretty sure battery wasn't low and still isn't because I replaced it before that trip due to it being low.

Hey guys, this exact same things just happened to me (also a Vyper, but from 2009) immediately after a battery change. I don't see how it could be the battery, since the battery guage on startup said the battery was fine. Since a few folks suggested dirty contact as the problem for it going into dive mode, it's in a bowl of water soaking, but I can hear the beeping from here. Feeling very sad about this if my computer is dead.
