I was looking at purchasing a wrist watch style dive comp., and was drawn to the Suunto D6.
Was wondering if anyone has had any experience they would be willing to share on either performance or reputation. Any info or recommendations would be very helpful... Thanks in advance

No help, but I thought if you're looking at the D6, you might also want to check out the newly-announced D4, which looks like a budget D6/D9.

I've got a D6 and have been pleased with the performance. I used to have a Stinger, and ran that for three-and-a-half years, then when the D6 came out I moved up, because I liked the two gas mix ability, and I liked the look of the thing.

The compass is a bit of a gimmick in my eyes, but otherwise, it works well.

I have a prototype D4 on loan at the moment and it is a nice computer. If all you want is a basic comp that will do nitrox (one mix) and full deco, then the D4 is a good option, but if you think you might be wanting to do accelerated deco down the line, then go for the D6. In the UK, the D4 is going to be £299 SRP, and the D6 is £460 SRP, so you are only looking at £160 more for the higher model.

It depends on how conservative a computer you like. Suunto makes good stuff, but I've found it to be too conservative for my taste.

I can't speak for the D6, but I do like my D9. I've heard people complain about the conservatism of the Suunto brand, but haven't found it a limiting factor in my limited experience (I haven't logged that many dives with my D9 yet). So far though, I'm pleased with the product.

I have several hundred dives on my d-6 and love it for warm water diving. I use it in gauge mode only so the computer aspect (level of conservatism) is not an issue. I tried it in cold water but the strap extender thing was a bit too hokey for me. I also bought one for my wife. It has become a kind of tradition to put my regular wrist watch away at the start of a trip and put on the d-6....kind of like psychologically preparing for the vacation :). Really like the D-6.

I just picked a D6 at a reasonable price, and I really like it. It's a very functional watch as well a solid computer. So far my only problem is that it looks like you can only get the download cable for $100 even though you can get the software for free. Does anyone know where to get a cheap D6/D9 cable? It's rediculus to pay that much for a cable! That's over 16% of what I paid for the computer!! I buddy of mine that's a professional diver said to go with a Uwtec or suunto.

Yeah, the cable is expensive, but as I've given up logging dives, it isn't such an issue for me. I wear my D6 as an everyday watch and, like the Stinger before it, it can put up with a lot of daily abuse, not just from diving.

I don't think you can go far wrong with a Uwatec or a Suunto. Not knocking other brands, but I have used both the former for many, many years and never had any problems whatsoever. However, when you start to hammer in the dives, particularly on a liveaboard trip, then the differences between the algorithms on the Uwatecs and the Suuntos really begins to show.

I often joke that Suuntos are like a protective mother – "It's time for you to go up now" – and Uwatecs are like your best friend – "Nah, mate, stay down another 15 minutes, you'll be fine" :D:D:D:D:D:D:D
