Im in the market to buy a new dive computer and I was wondering which one does everyone feel is a better buy?

the suunto cobra or the aeris ai

iv'e heard nothing but praise for the aeris ai. iv'e had my aeris atmos pro for 3 years, over 300dives and no problems. the aeris computers have more liberal dive profiles than sunnto. sunnto also is somewhat conservative on succesive deep dives. here in the upper keys, where we often dive 2 deep wrecks(110 to 135ft) with 1 to 2hr surface intervals, i see aeris, oceanic and uwatec computers most often. sunnto computers are a bit of a handicap on such profiles.

I have an Aeris AI....I love it...

Like the post said before it is very liberal and is really easy to work with...small and compact but easy to read numbers...

The air integration is great for recreational dives...it gives remaining bottom time based on the limiting factor... air quantity, nitrogen, or O2....

We finally bought computers about a year ago. We're inveterate comparison shoppers as we don't minding spending decent money for gear, but we want to be sure we're making the best decision we can. We narrowed our serach down to the Suunto Cobra and the Aeris. Both have downloadable tutorials from their respective websites. I think we would have been happy with either. Ultimately, we opted for the Suunto because our local dive shop could get us a better deal on one. We've done about twenty dives with our Cobras and we sure like 'em! :tree: :tree: :tree:

I would go with the cobra. I love gauge mode. It is also a nice computer for recreational diving.

I use a Cobra and a VyTec. I consider the fact that a Suunto is conservative a plus. I would rather lose a couple of minutes of time on repetitive dives than have a d.c. which allows me a better chance of coming up with decompression illness on something that it is cutting the margins of safety anyway.

To me the Cobra is the way to go!

your absolutely right brian... dive computers allow us so much additional bottom time no matter how "conservative" one is in comparison to another. Compare them to using the Padi RDP and see what conservative really is. I've considered even bumping up the conservatism on my cobra to P1 on certain dives just to be safe. Do we really know what the long term effects of pushing the limits on a regular basis are? Do these limits always take into consideration the fact that you're older, overweight, and/or out of shape? Heck, i'm 26 and nowhere near overweight, but the fact that I'm not in greatest cardiovascular health of my life right now troubles me. Every risk factor puts the odds against you a little more and should make you lean more and more towards conservatism. Its our responsibility to promote and maintain a good image of our sport. For every diver that dies because they foolishly push the limits, someone's inhibitions about becoming a diver are strengthened and the growth of our sport is inhibited.

What was the reason for this thread again? Sorry for the long speech...

As a reminder to we "ramblers", the thread was about which d.c. is a better choice. The choices were the Aeries Atmos 2 or the Suunto Cobra. The comparisons on "liberal" or "conservative" were brought up as selling points as the Aeries is slightly more "liberal". The discussion rambled from there:) , Sorry about that.

I have a Cobra, bought this year, I think it is completely brilliant. I've never used or even seen an Aeris so I can't compare them, but I don't think you'd regret it if you sepnt your money with Suunto

Dive safe.
