Hi,

I have planned a diving vacation at the end of this month -- and also plan to have surgery immediately upon return. We *tentatively* plan on diving (2X per day) on Days 2-3-4 of the vacation. Fly home on Day 5. Then have the surgery on the morning of Day 6.

The surgery is orthopedic (foot) - 1 hour outpatient. I have a phone call scheduled this week with a nurse to find out about the pre-op procedures and warnings (i.e. what medicines to stop taking before surgery, etc...). I plan to ask her my questions regarding diving. In the meantime, I'm curious if anyone else on this board has been in a similar situation, or is knowledgable about this top[ic

How long should a person wait after a dive (to depths less than 90 feet) to have surgery?

Are there any complications between diving and anesthesia?

Thanks,
Kay

Hi, Kay. The only concerns I would have are regarding the anesthesia. However, I think all should be well considering the surgery isn't going to occur for more than 24 hours after your last dive. The person to talk to about this would be the anesthiologist. But of course, you won't see him/her until the morning of the surgery.

and even the anethesiologist my not know a thing about diving. It´s probably a question for Dr. Deco, but by the time you´ll get surgery you won´t have much nitrogen excess. If you can get decompressed (flying) you should be abble to get surgery without problems.
