Frank, join the Divebums.com email list to get local dive reports. You can also introduce yourself and ask whether anyone would be willing to show you around at one of the local sites.
Another thing to look into is the Power Scuba Meetup, which schedules several dives every week.

Thanks everyone for the hints.. I already had joined Power Scuba in parallel..
Will also check with San Diego Divers once I am there..
In the meanwhile and for the moment it looks like I'll be staying recreational.. which is ok for the first time diving in the area
