I recently bought an Oceanic VT Pro+ dive computer. I really like the features ... it's basically a wireless version of the Datamax Pro+ I've been using for years. There's one irritating problem, though, and I'd like to see if anyone has a suggestion: The transmitter frequently loses contact with the computer on my wrist. I've replaced the battery in the transmitter, thinking a weak signal was the culprit ... no luck.

I connected the transmitter to the 1st stage through an HP hose and, with it dangling over the front of my BC, it worked fine ... except that pretty much defeats the purpose of a wireless device! I e-mailed Oceanic two weeks ago but haven't heard back. Is this a common problem? Any suggestions about what I should do, other than returning it? I was on a dive trip recently with a guy that had basically the same gear setup and he didn't have this problem with his VT Pro+.

I am having the exact same problem with my second computer. My first VT Pro did not have this problem. I am waiting to hear from from Oceanic as well. But when I tried to download the days dives to computer just froze up and stopped doing anything. Now the battery's dead and I am still waiting on a reply from Oceanic. I know this computer is going back just sucks that this is the second time for me.

My LDS says that Oceanic's service is poor, and that seems to be the case with both of us. If you get any resolution please let me know and I'll do the same!

I can't say bad service at all, the first computer problem I had I had a new computer in hand 2 days later. I believe the problem I am having now is the rep. I am dealing with is out if the area right now. I am stationed on Okinawa, Japan and the rep is in Hawaii. So I have to deal with the days and hours problem. But the first time it was quick and easy though. He just sent me an e-mail with a # on it and had me swap it out with a new on right from my LDS.

I just got a VT Pro, and have been testing it, "dry". Reception seems to be very good at 5-8 feet before losing the signal. It even impressed the LDS..

I have dealt w/the factory before on a bad Datamax. They were very fast, helpful, and sent me a replacement unit before receiving payment (only took checks). This saved a dive vacation. I"m a loyal Oceanic person now.

BTW: Anybody still diving a datamax with the old style flat battery should always keep the battery out of the unit except when actively diving. These batteries leak and will kill the Datamax since the battery compartment isn't sealed. The replacement units went to "watch" type batteries..

Oceanic has excellent customer service but perhaps not the best quality control on the VT Pro. The email address, however, is completely ignored as far as I can tell. Either return it to your LDS or call Oceanic. They will be very nice and efficient and replace your unit in a timely manner.

Since my last post I have had my computer replace again. But I never talked with the Oceanic people. I tried for over a week to get up with him but never heard from him. So I talked with the LDS and she tried to make contact with him. Come to find out he has been out of the office for like two weeks and she got a hold of him by cell phone. But anyway the LDS swapped out the computer for a second time with no problems. Now if I could just get time away from work to dive I would be ok.

I had the same problem with the previous model, the Data Trans Plus. It became really annoying once I got into photography, since the strobes also seem to disturb the signal. I always found Oceanic service to be excellent and typically they would send me a new computer within a week or two. After a trip to the Caymans where I had the camera with me every dive I had to use our VEO back up computer and a pressure gauge. My LDS gave me the name of the head problem solver at Oceanic and in the end they (Oceanic) gave me a new Pro Plus 2 for a very marginal fee. After talking to a lot of people I have not heard of a hoseless AI computer that does not have this problem to some degree.

I just dove the new (3rd) computer and had no problems with the reception this time around. Now I am afraid to do the download to the PC. Just in case this is what is wiping them out. I will wait a few more dives before I download them to test the waters.
