Yeah, I've never run the can light all the way to the backplate (I use a plastic tri-glide to keep it an inch off; helps in reaching the switch). A PT on the right can still make contact and can grab the switch. Not a huge deal, but a smaller light there is nice. Not having to spend $150+ is also nice.

I'm still confused!

I like the Photon Torpedo (LED), and the Dorcy.

I saw pictures of the PT, and a video of the Dorcy, and I'm impressed with both of them.

As for cost..I can get two Dorcy's for one PT.

And along that note, I want compact, so the Intova's come into that category.

Overall, I'm leaning towards the Dorcy.

What do you need the backup light for? Is your life dependent on it (true dark overhead environments)? Or is it just to save a night dive? For the former, get the PT (or Scout). If the latter, get the Dorcy (or Intova).

To be honest, I'm not sure exactly how to answer that question, but I am making my way into tech diving, so I guess the best answer would be the best flashlights to use to signal my buddy, in case of my canister light going out.

And I don't see myself in an overhead environment at any point in the future.

I have Halcyon LED Scouts. They put out a really yellow light, I'm not too happy with them. Maybe I'm spoiled with nice white HID light, but I recommend something besides the Scouts.

I really enjoy my OMS Vegas, they make an OMS Vega K2 now thats even brighter. They're small, but IMO still very easy to manipulate, and bright!

And they can survive being run over :D

Heser IMO is king of the backup lights (very bright white light and awesome construction) but euro170

The Salvos light was almost identical to Heser but not quite as good construction.

I am trying out a photon LED now. For backup lights I think it's clear LED is the way to go.

I agree, anything but a scout. Especially given the rubber covers on the light head just WILL NOT stay on any of my 4 scouts, or hardly any of my buddies without a DIY glue-job

I've had good sucess with the scubapro nova. I like it primarily because it has an on switch that is easy to use even with thick gloves on. It puts out a lot of light for a small package.

NOVA LIGHT - SCUBAPRO-UWATEC

I've been through many other lights. The twist-on twist-off lights invariably flood. Avoid those.
