I have used VR3's and a NHEO3 in the past but one of the VR3s is dead and the other one is going fast. So I just got a DIVESOFT Freedom and love it so far. I have yet to put it thru the really hard test but thus far...what a great computer.

IMO Shearwater is the only way to go. I had an X1 and bought a Petrel to back it up. Did one dive and sold the X1 and bought another Petrel. I have $1,150 in the 2 of them, one brand new and one had 30 dives on it. They can be found for a good price used and Shearwater has outstanding customer service so don't be discouraged from buying a used one if you decide on Shearwater.

the new Deep6 unit is going to be like $150, two button interface, bungee mount, and is a 3 gas nitrox computer with gauge mode.

Been using a Cochran EMC-20h (EAN only) set to back-gas only as a "lost deco gas plan" behind my Petrel............... thinking I may have found my new back-up to my Petrel..... interesting to see it come to market.

yeah, it doesn't use buhlmann, so you'll be fighting it a little bit I suspect, but you can always leave it in gauge mode. Will let you know when i get it in the water for demo

Curious, what then is the algorithm reportedly going to be? Fingers crossed, VPM?

not a prayer for vpm. takes way too much processing power to run. I can't remember which variant it is, but it's RGBM based

I spent a lot of time investigating, diving and testing, tech computers over the last year, prior to making my own purchase. I'm also lucky in that I get to see a great many different computers in use as I guide, or teach, visiting tech divers...

The Shearwater Petrel 2 was the clear winner.

It has a magnificent display, intuitive UI, choice to use VPM-B in addition to buhlmann, no frustrating lock-out and overrides, coordinates perfectly with desktop software like V-Planner/Multideco... and it empowers individual flexibility to dictate additional information on the main screen (i.e. GF99 and +5 options are very beneficial).

The user replaceable AA battery is well suited to frequent diving, as well as travel and operating in remote locations (where overnight power outages aren't unusual)

Not least, the Shearwater customer service is superlative...

My only negative feedback on the Petrel is that it doesn't have a bungee mount option. That's a small critique... and it's rare I can find nothing more to criticize! btw... it's easy to make a DIY bungee mount anyway...

Th display on my ageing Uwatec Pro Nitrox is getting dimer even with new battery. So I suspect it is on borrow time and a new computer with gauge mode at US$150.00 is a welcome.

Seabear h3 awsome unit !!!!!!!

If your on a budget the older Predator models from Shearwater are very good. You can pick them up used at a fairly low price point. They are a little larger than the Petrel series, and use a more expensive battery, but are still well supported.
