With your own gear that you care for and don't drag through the sand or something, I'd say it's not too common but sure it can happen.

Rental gear is another matter, often it's not cleaned and maintained as well as you would your own gear, and there are simply more opportunities for stuff to go wrong. More people are using the gear. and some of them may not be as careful with a rental as if it were their own gear. And if something is just a little not right and not dramatically broken, good chance it won't get mentioned and taken care of, leaving the next person to maybe have a bigger problem. Probably also the case that more folks who don't have their own gear yet are relatively new or infrequent divers and unfortunately may be more prone to dredging up the bottom. In general, you can expect more problems with rentals, which is why people like to get their own gear.

Then again, my husband, who has been diving a long time and knows better - but is a, um, photographer ;) - came up from a dive last week and I notice there is a freakin' sand dune on the bench under his gear and gee, his octopus is full of sand. I'm like, uh, thanks, I might need to use that thing...
