Strobe too strong for Makro Solution ??

The CHDK Canon firmware replacement project does not support that camera as far as I can tell. That is too bad as it would probably give you some more manual controls.

Seems like your only option is blocking the strobe output, unfortunately.
 
Try to image the strobe power output in cone shape. Use just edge of cone, not center of strobe power, to render object. It should be help.
 
a canon ixus 110 is compact camera with no real manual settings, only the -2 to +2 exposure correction

try hand holding strobe further away from subject..go thing about digital is you can Shoot Adjust Shoot until you get the results you want
