I have an Olympus 1030SW and have used it while diving and snorkeling. It is very easy to use and quality seems pretty good. We are going to Tahiti in three weeks where we will be diving and snorkeling. I am very interested in getting a strobe for my point and shoot, but unsure of where to start.

Olympus has a strobe but not sure if it is what I need/want.

I have contacted Inon about compatibility of the D2000 and this is what they said:

Hello Diana,

Thank you for your inquiry.

We are currently waiting for INON, Inc. (manufacturer) to tell us if they are going to make a specific mount base and Optical D Cable/Cap set for the Olympus PT-043 (1030SW Housing). At this time, they have stated they are studying the feasibility of support. We are hoping to know in the next couple weeks if they will fully support this model.

However, until we have a precision cable connectivity method via a mount base, you can use our Universal Optical D Cable ($79.95) to connect any of our strobes to almost any clear-case housing, such as the PT-043. The Universal Optical D Cable connects to your housing via a Delrin (heavy locking velcro) connection.

I would suggest the D2000 Type 3 Strobe ($539.00) as the strobe of choice for your setup. It has plenty of power for any point and shoot system and it has a focus/modeling light as well.

If you have further questions, please let me know.

Kind Regards,
Jolene Philbrook

Has anyone tried this set up? Any pros or cons? I would appreciate any input.

Thanks
Diana

I also have the 1030SW and have used it diving for two trips, to Cozumel and most recently Utila. I have had great results and a lot of fun with it but so far have used it without a strobe. Tough little camera; the underwater housing (PT-043) flooded 1/2 way at 65 ft. but the camera survived and after careful rinsing and drying, I was back in business for diving the next morning.

I'd love to know how you or others have set this camera up with a strobe as I'd like to try that for our next trip. I'd appreciate anyone's experience using this camera with a strobe.:D

Talk to Jack at Optical Ocean Sales. He has both Olympus and Sea and Sea strobes and is a rep for Olympus. He can probably point you in the right direction. If you want a realativly cheep solution you could go with a Sea Life strobe as well, they are about $300 and can be fired by fiber optics. I had one of them for a while and found it reliable.

I wound up buying the AF35 Substrobe with autoflash from Ikelite and just got back from using it in Cozumel. It took a little getting used to. I took pretty good pictures without it but by the end of the trip my pictures were getting better. I still need a little practice.;)

Thanks for the info Jack, just came a little late for me!

I appreciate all your help, I will look into the options and make a choice soon. I won't really need it until I head back to Cozumel in February '10 but would like to practice with it on a dive or three over the summer. It's great to hear that there are a fair number of options, and I'll definately check out your blog, Jack.

In case you or anyone else is interested, I used this camera during a trip to Utila from which we returned april 11. I've posted a trip report with several photos attached taken with this camera; the trip report also contains a link to a tripadvisor review with several more photos also taken with the SW1030 including some whale shark shots.
