I've had a Sterilite "foot locker" crack after a couple of years. The folks at Rubbermaid gleefully say that's what happens when you buy the cheap competition, the plastic is cheaper. And, I've had the same issue with plastic storage/shipping boxes from Home Depot, not as durable as the commercial brands.

One option might be a rolling trash can. 40-50 gallon size trash cans with two wheels on them. The vertical orientation can be a mixed blessing but they are rugged, durable, easy to find, and will take up fewer square feet of floor space.

I have a rule for any group trips that I lead No trash bags as luggage I have swung by the dumpster on the way home and threw out all of the trash including all of the trash bags that were being used as luggage I will have to add no trashcans as luggage to that list.

I use 2 of these in the basement.

I have had good luck with these 27 gallon totes from Home Depot. They are not wheeled but are very sturdy and stackable.

My dive team uses them for personal gear. They are stacked in our trailer. They have never toppled over even stacked 3 high.
