Ok I just got my new Dite Rite Wreck light with HID. Where do you people store these things? A Pelican dry box with styroform cutsouts? How do you transport the light to a diving location or a dive boat? I have an Akona gear bag but I know I don't wanna throw my light in there with everything else. Thanx in advance for the help.=-)

Where do you store it at home? Does it pay to get a seperate box for it?

It goes in my bag with everything else. Keep a coolie cup (Halcyon of course) over the reflector. At home I remove the battery, charge it and leave it dissassembled until the day before dive, at which time it goes back in the bag.

I put a can cozy around the lighthead, then put everything in a regulator bag, including the charger. The only thing you need to worry about is the lighthead, and to a lesser extent, the cord. DR bulbs for MR-11 are $100 and they will NOT take much banging around.

Be much more concerned about the lighthead while you are on the boat gearing up. Your first action should be to hook the lighthead to the shoulder d-ring, preferably with the DR cover or cozy still in place. Then be careful when you move the webbing around that you don't bang the lighthead against something. Likewise, once geared up, do NOT unhook lighthead until you are ready to place it on your hand (you did get Goodman handle?) and get wet.

I have a padded fabric cooler bag that was designed to hold a six pack of cans, and ice, with a zipper flap for a lid. For years I used it as a camera case, but now it's my HID bag - being a cooler bag, you can dump the light in there after diving, and add a little water to keep it wet and stop the salt forming after diving until you get it home. After putting the light in I also put my computer, compass, and drysuit pocket contents in there. Get home, clean the gear, rinse the bag, let it dry, put everything back in for storage (after disconnecting the battery).

A neoprene stubby holder (can/bottle holder) also makes a good lighthead cover to protect the bulb.

Works great, and is a lot less bulky / lighter / cheaper than a Pelican case.

[edit] - MechDiver's paragraph about leaving the lighthead clipped off until diving is basically what I do - leave the cover on until you're wearing the rig and ready to put your fins on etc.

I baby mine big time. I am sure they can take a lot of abuse but I dont want to find out how much and have to pay for a new bulb =]

I have a MR-11 now and will have a helios 9 later this week. That thing will be buckled into the passanger seat while my guests ride in the trunk =]

Yes I got the Goodman handle with it. I didn't realize how delicate these lightheads are. thanx for the tips on the stores bags too.
