I doubt it. A large stingray can drive its spine through a 2X4.

I've seen Southern Stingrays the size of a hot-tub with a spine a foot long. Nothing short of armor plate would stop something like that.

How common is it for the really large stingrays to frequent shallow water, waist deep or less, where snorkelers or shore divers are apt to get on one? I have no idea, but these posts led me to wonder.

Depends on what part of the world you're in. In the Caribbean one finds scorpion fish, which from what I've read can be agonizing, but based on reports stone fish are at another level.

In shallows with sea grass, I've seen a bristle worm and sea urchins. There are a number of things out there that can 'get' us.
