Since August, Merry and I have photographed up to 135 individual fish at the Hermosa Reef. These large wreckfish rub against the concrete pilings and sponges to remove parasites. Rock wrasse, sheephead, senorita, and even calico bass have been observed cleaning the gentle giants there.
We have uploaded our findings to Spotting Giant Sea Bass but we may have overwhelmed them. They have only posted a handful this Fall.
The fish are very cooperative at Hermosa Reef. They not only allow us to be within inches of them, but if we move slowly enough, we are able to swim around them to photograph each side.
My favorite moment this year was not only getting each side of a particular fish, but getting each side of its dark and light phase during the same dive.
The wreckfish (Giant Sea Bass) range from 2 1/2 to six feet long. All seem to tolerate our intrusion.
