Starbucks' is Open in Cozumel!

Almity, that was hilarious, I mean cheeky.

Starbucks are the new meat markets, I've decided. But I prefer more chatty bar-version I guess. Those silent peeping types freak me out a bit.

Still, Cristy, I do know that when you are living outside of your home country how it is to get something familiar. (I am still waiting for Nordstrom's)
Hawaii is not really America, you know, rice at McDonalds and all. I miss everything Mexican the most. SoCal is soooo Mexican, in so many ways. I could live the rest of my life and be very happy never seeing any more rice---beans, that's another story.

You know, they make those Starbucks ice coffees and sell them by the case at Costco. No Costco?...now that would kill me.
 
So the evil empire has infiltrated our favorite caribbean town. No stopping them now. I am sure there will be three more within the next two years.

But my question is, were they able to break away from the traditional Starbucks look. You know.... earth tone velvet chairs, soft lighting, metal stamped table tops, cherry stained cabinetry with black accents. It is a look better suited for Manhattan than an island local. My guess is they picked out decor #3 and combined with seating package #8. It worked well in Kansas City, Tampa Bay and Store #127 in Chicago, why not Cozumel.

Does it at least have a palm tree, hibiscus plant or Caribbean Blue panted on the walls? How about some fun drink names like Cozzy Mocha, Sea Turtle Fudge Latte, The Triple Devil's Throat and The DCS Stopper. When you order the drink nonfat do you say "I'll take that Nitroxed"? And do you ask for your capp with light "Sea Foam" Somehow I doubt this is going on. A coffee shop in Cozumel should be fun and take up the personality of the island, not corporate. I will have to break down and peak in the windows of this place in a couple of weeks.

Haha! You make some excellent points and have some great things for the suggestion box! To be very honest...I didn't pay attention to details when I went in because I was so excited to be getting my iced coffee. On quick glance, it did appear to have the same decor of every other Starbuck's I've ever been in....I'll pay more attention to the wall art next time I go in. I did actually attempt to go get a coffee today, but it was packed (with locals and tourists...mostly locals) and I was in a rush...so I'll have to try again later :)

Catherine...yes, Hawaii is different than the states :) We have a Costco in Cancun...so anytime I am in the Cancun area, I peruse through there. I've had the bottled iced coffees that Starbuck's sells...but still not the same as a fresh brewed iced espresso :)

I'm in agreement that Starbucks is the evil empire...first they took over the coffee connection in Harvard Square (Go ahead, call me an elitist, I don't care) then one day on the riverwalk in San Antonio (okay, you can take back calling me an elitist) I listened to some pimply fake goth teen-on-a-trust fund lecture me about how they invented espresso (pronounced 'expresso') in Seattle. Then on the occasion that I need a quick jolt and Starbucks is the only option, I get to go through this whole ultra corporate-masquerading-as-cool banter just to get an average coffee for $2.50 or a barely passable cappucino for $4. You gotta hand it to them, they sell an addictive substance at a high profit margin and even people that hate their guts, like me, will still succumb when necessary.

Boy, that felt good.

The odd thing, and I have experienced this all over Mexico except for in Xalapa, is that a country that grows so much coffee can't seem to figure out how to make a decent cup of it. Still, in Cozumel there's that place a few blocks north of town Cafe Chiapas; I've only bought coffee in a bag there, but I seem to remember they usually have some brewing. It HAS to be better than Starbucks.

Anyhow, you live there, so if you like it, I'm happy for you. I really am. As a fellow caffeine addict I understand the importance of getting your fix. Usually when I'm there I get a 1/2kilo from cafe chiapas and make my own; I'm even considering getting a stainless (or titanium, for hiking trips) french press to take down there. Now to find decent half&half.....

Haha! That was actually brilliant! And I'm SOOOOO glad someone else agrees that finding a decent cup of coffee here is extraordinarily hard. I've bought beans at Chiapas...but I didn't like what I bought...it was too spicy. I didn't feel like I was drinking coffee at all...more of a weird cinnamon clove type flavor...it was weird! Maybe I'll have to give it another try!

As for half and half here...that's another tough one. I make my own sometimes, but I finally just got used to regular milk in my coffee...and now it's skim milk only. My concoction of half and half is equal parts of skim milk and media crema. The media crema is pretty thick, so the skim milk helps that...however, you have to mix it together and shake it up really well. Otherwise, you don't get the same effect or consistency. I used to make it by the 1 liter batch and keep it in the fridge obviously. Try that next time :)
 
we take ours on all our trips (the French press) and buy a can of whipped cream for the honor bar.

I can't go to Starbucks because I take my coffee in bed before getting up.
