40” is standard, but 36” certainly works. I think I might have a 36” hose on a few of my regs and I don’t notice it one way or another.

I’d stick with 40” if that’s what you’ve got.

It wasn't my reg, so I'm just doing some research now before buying. I'll probably just do 40. Not like it's a big deal to change the hose anyway.
 
If it's a bit long in use and if you're using a turret, it's possible to twist the turret so the hose is a little more snug to your neck.
