i am still fairly new to diving i completed my OW four or five months ago and since diving down to about 23 metres i have experienced a squeaking and crackling in my ears whenever i rise to the surface. I usually experience some problems with clearing my ears whilst descending but after clearing them so i feel no discomfort, when i later rise to the surface there is a squeaking adn crackling in my ears which i find quite worrying. I can only clear my ears by swallowing adn wiggling my jaw as blowing gnetly down my nose has never worked with me . Since diving down to 20 metres i now experience this even if i only dive a few metres down. There is never any pain but the odd noises are very worrying as nobody else i know has experienced this and i know that after clearing your ears while decending there shouldn't be any problems with ascending. Plz help!

I get it once and a while. I think it's just the ears equalizing to the pressure change as you ascend. See, all the air you put into the ears on descent has to come out on ascent as air expands. :)

That's my understanding of it, anyway.

Yep. Not only is it normal, but it's a cue you can use that will let you know you're ascending.

There are lots of previous threads on this and most seem to think that as long as no pain is present you are ok. I get the same sounds when ascending also. I think it is only my ears equalizing and letting the expanding air out. When equalizing on the way down there is noise involved so I have to imagine for the air to get back out noise might also happen. I've had the crackling and have never had any problems or pain during ascent. Just be sure your ascent rate is not to fast. Actually it seems to happen less often the more frequent I dive.

thanks a lot. sorry i may have just been paranoid but as i joined a club that my instructor set up and have only ever previously been diving with this club, for the first time i am going on holiday since i learned to dive and am going to go diving with people i dont no..and i dont want to run into any difficulties even though i hav experienced none before that could ruin the experience for me!
