If you think that a banner on your tank has anything what-so-ever to do with your diving safety (a field that I've spent my entire adult career in) then I strongly recommend you go back to one of the shops that requires such a banner and, with your hand over your wallet, retake their NITROX class and see if there actually is anything but a shop driven profit center going on.

Why are you spewing this kind of drivel pretty pathetic to say the least did you actually mention diving safety you are joking.......right?

Just buy bright fins. I have yellow Apollo fins which I actually bought for my dive buddies to easily see me.

I would not mess with the tank finish, use a mesh and rinse.

You can lead a horse to water but all you can get them to do is to lie down in a buttered bed.:shakehead:

Still waiting for you to elaborate what the problem is with having a sticker (not the bumper kind) on your tank, could be combined with the VIP sticker stating your tanks have been O2 cleaned and good for O2 service, if you dive with Nitrox now and then. As for the cost of the sticker hey if a couple of bucks is breaking your budget maybe you should consider other options as we all know Scuba diving is not a cheap hobby :D

As for your above statement how did we get into a discussion on horses :crafty:

Yes I am in agreement based on the OP's original question that painting a galvanized tank or adding unnecessary stickers should be avoided.

What I object to is the many shops that gouge the diving public for oxygen cleaning that is unnecessary, or sell them extra priced overhauls to make their regulators "NITROX compatible," etc. I have not problem with an Internal Inspection sticker that also states that something is cleaned for oxygen service, but that's basically crap too since a tank is only as clean as it's last fill.

Nitrox tank wraps are not a requirement in Canada. All you need is a VIP sticker, which should have a statement on it if the tank has been cleaned for O2 service or not (if doing PP blending). If someone is requiring you to have one it's because they want to charge you $7 for a $1 sticker.

My HP100s came with a sticker saying they've been O2 cleaned from Worthington as well.

Some shops here(well, maybe 1?) are wary about doing PP Nitrox fills with random tanks that're brought in without a tank wrap, but **** em'. If it still has more than 21% of a blend inside of it..

Any reputable shop I have asked to fill my bottles with Nitrox require a sticker stating the tanks has been cleaned and serviced for O2 that includes the valve O rings be suitable for O2 service.

O2 cleaning is only needed when nitrox is filled using the partial pressure blending method. Many shops either bank nitrox or have a continuos blending system, in which case there is no need for the tanks to be O2 cleaned.

None of this is law, BTW, only rules set up by dive shops and the scuba industry.

As has been pointed out, the stickers are relatively useless, and in fact anyone can buy one and just put it on their tank. If nitrox was really that dangerous, blenders would A) probably reject ANY tank that they're not familiar with, and B) have laws to follow that required inspection by licensed inspectors, just like hydro. Anyone can O2 clean a tank and tell the world it's clean.

Many local dive leaders here in Belize use two differently coloured fins. Of course, once you've lost sight of them that doesn't help you to find them.....

Am I misunderstanding that all David is saying is they are requiring a 02 cleaned sticker, I know my shops won't will a tank with Nitrox with out a 02 cleaned sticker. It can be a combo VIP/O2 clean sticker or two seperate stickers. By the way my dive shop I use does a lot of nitrox fills every week..and use's partial pressure blending. I know the three shops around me all require the 02 cleaned label for nitrox fills though. None require the banner Nitrox band stickers though.

Anyhow as to the OP....my son is 10 and was just certified. He did his check out dives in our local quarry. We have a bunch of underwater attactions with ropes leading to some of them so new divers can dive with no navagation skills.

On his third check out dive, which I was tagging along, the instructor had 4 students and me and another certified diver in the group. I was buddied up with the other certified diver and was asked that we stay behind. My 10 yr old was buddied up with a woman in her 40's and the other two were buddied up. The students were asked to stay in their buddy groups with one group to the instructors left and one to his right. We went to the platforms at 25', to a bus at 50', to a fire engine at 20', then reversed. The vis was so-so to the point I couldn't always see the other students. I saw my son and his buddy when we got back to the bus and we started following the rope to the training platform at 25'. Once we got to the platform the instructor started looking around and making the buddy hand symbol to everyone. I realized at that point that someone was missing..I started looking at everyones fins knowing my son had red fins...no red fins anywhere. At this point we were at the platform for a minute and I was about to freak, looking down over the platform there was no bubbles coming up yet with the silt you couldnt see the bottom at around 45-50'. Looking up you could see the surface but no one was up there...I almost said f this I am going to search the bottom when the instructor swam away down the set of training platforms. I decided to follow, and at the last platform my son was there looking confused. :idk: "When we got out I asked him what happened, he told me, when we got back to the platform there was some other divers there that looked like the group so I followed them. When I got to the last platform they looked at me and swam away" This happened a month or so ago. I was grocery shopping with him today and he told me, "remember when I got separated at my training dive. After the group I followed swam away I swam over to some other divers and waved my hand at them, they looked at me weird and swam away. So whats the right signal for I am lost?"

Now Ill tell you the second I realized he was gone my heart sunk like never before I was sure he was dead or something. It was a scary minute till we found him.

If he was more able to recognize us (or the instuctor kept a better eye on the youngest student, and only child in the group) this wouldnt have happened. I think doing something on your gear might be a worth while idea to make sure you are easy for your child to see underwater. FWIW I have dove every weekend with him since then with no issue since I am his buddy and we are right next to each other. I remind him when he needs a little air dump or added to his bc, tell him to flood his mask and clear it, practice buddy breathing passing a single reg, etc..to help him firm his skills. This way I know he is able to help himself if for some odd ball reason we are ever separated again. Of course he learned the basics in his cert course but constantly making him repeat these tasks makes me more comfortable with his diving.

By the way if you were diving at a local training quarry and some little kid on a 25' deep platform came swimming over to you completely alone, would you just leave him alone and swim away? I know I would have stayed with him, or used my slate to ask him if he was ok....anyhow thats just me.
