Hi all - yesterday afternoon (10/30/06, 3:00 pm) my girlfriend and I were snorkeling at the pier at Lauderdale by the Sea and we saw a Spotted Eagle Ray! We were about 40 ft north of the end of the pier when we saw it. We were about 20 ft from the ray before it left. It only stuck around for about a minute. It was about 5 ft wide and gorgeous. Absolutely incredible. I tried to get some pictures but they didn't turn out too well because it was flying away from us.

Has anyone else seen one there? We've seen one in Roatan but never in Florida. We've seen everything else under the sun at that pier but that eagle ray was the best yet.

Here in the upper keys we sometimes see them on every other dive The best site so far in my opinion has been Hens and chickens where I see 2-3 almost on every dive.

I have not seen them (IN FLL), but they are sighted along the cost (seen in Boynton) - more frequently in Key Largo. I have seen them in Key Largo too.

I missed the ray, but we saw a Northern Stargazer just south of there yesterday afternoon. Marvel was more excited about the Loggerhead, but I've seen lots of Loggerheads, it was my 1st Stargazer ever.

Hermit Crab and I saw a spotted eagle ray while snorkeling off of Dania Beach a couple years ago.

Would love to see a northern stargazer!!

Wow. We were snorkeling there between noon and four. We saw lots of divers in the water. When were you there?

Did you pet it's head? :rofl3:

Cool! I've seen spotted eagle Rays in Jupiter, and in the Keys. If I've seen a Stargazer I likley would not even been aware of what it was, but now I know! :D
