According to Matt & Katie on NBC this morning this soccer resentment is most likely the result of a midlife crisis as is the challenge of NASCAR and Diving as a sport.

Every "sport" I could think of today, kept score or had an elimination type competition till there was a "winner".

So I suppose mountain climbing, skydiving, white water kayaking etc. are also not sports? I would say that any activity that requires a good level of fitness, good motor skills and coordination etc qualifies.
Just reading the posts on SB it's easy enough to see that divers 'keep score' - and it sure has an entertainment value! :D

Ken - Americans aren't interested in football because it'd take them too long to win the World Cup. Sheesh....don't drummers know anything?

It's a hobby when I'm under water, buying more gear or surfing SB.

It's a sport when I'm pulling all my gear out of my car, fighting with my wetsuit, hauling my kit onto my back or negotiating goat paths, fully geared up, to get to the entry point.
