Are there any dive operators in the Key Largo area who aren't charging the $10 "Spiegal Grove Diving Tax"?

We dove with Paradise Charters over Labor Day and did 2 dives on the SP with no "wreck tag fee". I dove with Ocean Divers on one day and overheard them telling customers wanting to dive the SP that they had to buy the tags at $10 a pop.

Yeah, doesn't sound too unreasonable. Heck, there are quarries that charge that much to dive.

It is a donation. The SG prep wasn't free. Sinking it (twice) wasn't free. The two types of membership are annually($10) and lifetime($250). It is to support the Northern Keys Artificial Reef Program.

Withouth it the SG wouldn't be there to dive at and you'd be forced to just dive the duanne or bibb if you want a intact wreck.

SG is the most memoriable divesite I've had so far.

with your whine?

Absolutley amazing. You would choose a boat based on that? You know who is NOT charging it? Can you say "fly by night"?

Any shop/boat who is a member of KADO will charge you this fee, ten lousy bucks for a whole year. Its not just the SG either, Bibb and Duane also.

I bet you don't tip the boat crew either, huh?

Pay it or go somewhere else.

Voluntary for the shops, not the divers.
Meaning it's not a donation after all, but rather a surcharge or tax.

BTW, are you saying it's voluntary for the shops to pass on the "donations" they've collected, but not mandatory?

As for divers...aren't divers from private boats exempted?

I see you're from Carlsbad, CALIFORNIA. So you're going to travel all the way to S. Florida to dive, and base the boat you use on a $10 charge?!! If it were me, I'd be sure I had a good experience and use a reputable boat that follows the rules.
