I think you were right about this area. I pried open the SPG today. The internal mechanism worked fine hooked up to the HP w/out its cover. But the o-ring around the removed lens was encrusted with salt & mud.
After lubing the ring and reassembling the lens I'm going to test it again. This makes six o-rings altogether. I do believe an o-ring at the top of the barrel is to assist the HP seal between the barrel and the guage box and the other two prevent water intrusion. This might explain why it still worked yet leaked water. With all these o-rings it makes me think they could use routine overhauls...so long as you dont crack the case when prying open the plastic sleeve...
