I am new to diving(doing my check out dives this week!) and I want to start putting together a spare parts/misc equipment bag. What things do you recommend or are most important?

Used to carry two of everything for diving in different conditions and a kit for fixing everyone elses crapped out junk, including the bus and boat on one course. Now I carry two of everything for diving in different conditions and dive by myself, not because I'm sick of people and their crapped out junk but having much free time I am able to go at the drop of a tank on my foot day or night.

In general, a good rule for diving:

"Two is one. One is none."

I second RJP
"Two is one. One is none."

Not too be arrogant but, I maintain my gear and keep it very well maintained but, some of the buddies I dive with not as diligent, so it helps too have extras so if their gear craps out I have a back up so we can still dive.
I have a rtepair bag that has toolkit, zip ties,lube,o-rings,extra inflator/hose,extra hoses,fin/mask straps etc... and also carry a complete regulator set. Some say it is overkill but, that is just me I guess. I'd rather have it and never need it rather than need and not have it.....

Scuba seems to attract people with an affinity for gear. Most of what you add to your spare parts collection will never be needed. Do a cost/benefit analysis before you buy a lot of unnecessary stuff. Will you be saving a dive in the Galapagos that you won't have another chance at in this lifetime? Or is it a quarry dive that you can attempt again next weekend? Sometimes the best spare parts kit is a nearby dive operator with rental gear.

TRIDENT brand sells a little $ 25 or so save-a-dive kit that will give you a good start into what constitutes a decent save-a-dive kit, then you can expand on that kit by including extra items (depending on your weight/space limitations) listed on the threads 'vladimir' pointed out.

One thing to consider is the impact of not having a spare. How screwed will you be? The larger the consequence, the more I tend to carry. For example, a spare camera syn cord on a live aboard might be a must have while a spare HP hose on a place like Bonaire wouldn't be.

Here is my minimum set:
a) Spare tank o-rings.
b) Spare mask and fin strap (and any buckles or attachment points)
c) Zip ties
d) Spare fastex buckles (if your gear has any)

Then there are the camera related parts I stock...

Bungee! Something to cut it and Aquaseal to stop the frays... the scuba wonder material. Works for mask straps, fin straps, computer bands, BC repairs, snorkel keepers, octo holders, etc. ORings and fastex buckles also top my list.

Hoses including HP, reg and BP. Couple wrenches (I suggest the Innovative Scuba ones as they are lightweight and pack down real small).

I recommend carrying an array of other items but IMO keep the kit light so it packs and you will be more apt to take it. Packing a bunch of stuff just leads to a heavy bag that will surely be left the one time you need it.
